This is a long slog :'(I was going to log the time it took to strip these but it,s a labour of love and vanity now so I will just keep track of the material costs, another set of wire wheels for the drill total now £30.that said I am getting there with 20 30 minutes a day and no real deadline they will be done for spring ish . So moody has been playing up by almost starting but dying after a second or so and then refusing to start till it got a sniff of easy start, yes lazy I know but I have to get to work.I stripped the carb down and as expected the pilot jet had a tiny spec of dirt in there! so rebuilt and left overnight started first kick this am.I have drilled a hole in the panel that let's me use a straw to introduce easy start directly into the snorkel a simple improvement that makes a huge difference at 7am on a cold day. An easy route to add nitrous too now. 👍😉

The intermittent non start persists,I will try a different pilot jet on Saturday.A milage milestone clicked over today the speedo reads 16,000,I have put at least 11k of them on myself and taking into account a huge chunk of miles not recorded by the old faulty sender the true milage is a round 18k,hope it continues to rack them up.

So I have lived with the no start problem, scoot runs well once started and shows no hesitation starting while warm or up to six hours after that it needs easy start to get going.yesterday I swapped out the pilot jet for a spare I have lying around (no numbers on either) the old pilot jet looked just a tad smaller or maybe a little coated and way to small to photograph, result 8 hours of chilling it started easily so I left it overnight and unusually added a layer of snow to the scoot but it started up first kick, job done I hope. jetting gremlins caused me to pull all my hair out . probably just a touch of varnish in the original . you could boil it out .

That's a good test, if it normally won't start when cold.

So it,s a blocked choked up jet,the diameter is beyond my measuring capabilities and a replacement would be just a shot in dark,as it might take another 16 years for this new one to clog up I had better get on it .I have a raft of chemicals and concoctions already to hand,Zinos boil it option will be the backstop.first up is rust remover the jet is soaking as I type, just a fizzle after a few minutes then nothing,I will leave it 24 hours and report back. Oh woe is me,the non start gremlin has returned, the easy start is needed after just a few hours sitting but it still runs perfect after start up,I have striped the carb like a sniper cleans his gun it is spotless down to polishing the enricher needle. mindful that I need this scoot daily my next move is engine out and the crank seals replaced,??does the engine need a "charge" of mixture in the crankcase to start.
Help if you can

You should be able to change the crank seals without taking the engine out. It should be under an hour to change both. You need a flywheel puller for the right side.

I will tackle the crank seals next weekend with the engine in sit u but doubt I will get it done under the hour,if I stretch it out over two days Mrs H can,t expect any other tasks attempted while I bang a hammer on the bench Geoff

Here,s a twist rebuilt the carb and fully expected moody to need easy start but lo and behold it fires up first kick from stone cold.I "think" the enricher system may have had a blockage,it,s beyond me to explain how that works but the channels and air ways to and from it are tiny I poke a wire through and blow through a drinks straw to check they are clear, must have missed that on the last clean.

Had that sorted the cold start issue now Geoff?

The cold start issue has gone for now.the scoot passed its MOT test this morning £30,road tax is due £21 and insurance £67 so I am road legal for another year. The MOT inspection mentioned that the rear shocker has a slight leak which I will replace in spring.
