Also, gang, thanks for all your patience! Here's another hurdle: discovered the pipe that goes off the header pipe near the flange has broken off! So I have the header going to the muffler from the place it is bolted on and this other thin pipe with a flexible hose-type pipe connected to it that runs to what I believe may be the main filter? AND there is nothing covering around the area the header pipe is attached on the bottom, only a plastic cover around the sides that has a 4"x5" square cut out on the other side! Am I missing something vital for my exhaust other than the broken pipe? I have a 50QT-2 two-stroke engine and from what I gather, it is horizontal, at least the spark plug sticks out that way..Any ideas??

The starter is just a DC voltage electric motor. That being said your starter is going either have two wires coming from it or one wire. If it has two wires coming from it then you have a + and a - wire. If it has one wire then that wire is + and the case is -. To test the starter outside of the circuit, meaning the relay, switch and battery is fairly easy.
Follow the wire coming from the relay to the starter, this wire will be the +. Using test leads connect one from the + of the battery to the +wire of the starter.(Unplug the starter wire from the relay and other circuit first). Connect the other test lead from the - of the battery to the other wire of the starter or in the event of the case being ground you should not have to do anything. If the starter motor is good it will turn or you may hear it hummmm as it is not good. Do not leave the test leads hooked up to it long as it will pull too much current through them and cause the wires to melt.
