One of the things I get frustrated (my own doing) so much is that I CAN NOT find tools that I'm looking for whenever I want to work on me bikes and scoots, and other house related works... Need a socket to change oil? 15 min. search. Need a needlenose plier? Look in the bathroom. Need a drill bit? Fogghediboutdit!
So I finally got one o them tool chest. Can't believe I've never owned one... sheesh. It's just a basic unit, but I'm hoping that I will cut my tool search time down by at least half!
I wanna know what yous youts do to organize your tools, please! Show how you have things lined up, or have things hanging (like peg boards), and how I should make my garage tool area semi-professional looking/working! I was thinkin aboot using one complete wall just to hang tools and draw the outline of it for ease replacement....

Nice! Which bike did that fit on? Now the fun part, buying more tools to fill it up. Half the fun is seeing how many drawers you can leave open. I'm guilty of that one.

Different colored travel bar-soap-containers (Walmart) work well for "grouping" various items such as socket adapters and universals.

Harbor Freight parts boxes, about $6 each if you catch them on sale. I made the rack sides from aluminum I had on hand, but wood could be used just as well. The dividers are the closet shelving stuff you can get from Lowes or Home Depot.

They have 3 different sized compartments in each one, you can mix compartments between a few of them to have all one sized compartments if you want. They also have 1/2 sized boxes 2 of which fit perfectly side by side on a shelf. The half sized boxes are great variator weights. I put all the 16x13 in one 15x12 in another.... I need to build another rack because I have around 10 more boxes. They are a pain to stack and unstack without a rack to put them in.

I have a tool chest but it needs to be dumped out and reworked.
I have a HF steel service cart with two drawers under it for working on the scoot. I tried the pegboard with outlines, -it works OK if your tool collection is static, mine wasn't. I have a whole bunch of steel lab cabinets I can hang on walls wherever I want with French cleats. I use smaller plastic drawer units inside them. Keeping things organized and containers labeled is a big chore but it pays off.
I use blocks of wood with drilled holes to hold all of those 1/4" hex driver bits I accumulate.
I have a bad habit of dropping tools wherever I am when I get tired. Old age sucks.

Most of my toolbox is just putting groups of things into drawers however they fit, but I do at least keep commonly used sockets and wrenches straight with organizers because it's so much easier to keep track of them and find what I need quickly. My small box is a real mess, but I can find what I need. So many contraptions for things like cc-ing heads or checking timing just tossed in there. I did at least make a box to hold a bunch of rotary tool bits. I've got a 4'x4' pegboard area, but that mostly holds CVT tuning "tools". I forgot to get a pic, but I've got small parts organization somewhat similar to what oldgeek posted... but mine was free. I had multiple friends that worked in an auto parts store and also brought their stuff to my garage to work on. When they were swapping to new organizations systems, they thought of me and gave me a few sets of metal boxes that would have been tossed out if no one took them. I also got 2 tool carts for free that way, because of some sort of issue at their store where there were 4 to be had between about 10 employees and I ended up with 2 and I don't even work there. lol One has a crappy drill press and a bench grinder mounted to it now. EDIT : Here's my free small parts storage. The plastic setup to the right is a Plano fishing tackle storage piece that I bought nearly 20 years ago when I was doing car stereo installs for various connectors and small parts and it's been quite handy too. Speaking of friends working in your garage... here's a tip. Make them bring their own supplies or have a shop fund box in a prominent area and require a "donation". I used to let a few friends take what they needed, but then I'd be missing $50 worth of connectors, bolts, washers, etc... after a while and not have what I needed for my own stuff. I put up a shop fund box and you had to toss in at least a few bucks if you wanted to use my stuff or bring your own and it helped me keep everything stocked and made the moochers work on stuff elsewhere. Most of the times that someone brought their own stuff, they put the leftover fasteners, connectors, shop towels, and chemicals in my supply too.
