Ford 500 CFT30 CVT Repair.

Well I just finished my first repair of the year on top of all of my other projects.
My dad bought a $500 05 Ford five hundred that didn't shift of course I asked him what is wrong with you? Lol. I started diagnosing the problem and noticed a strange metallic sound coming from the transmission while in gear of course the car didn't move even the slightest bit so immediately I started the tear down removed the transmission after 2 days of fighting with it then I split the tranny case and found 2 failed bearings and a severed input shaft. Got on Amazon and found a new one for $250 once that came in I installed it noticing I had to fully tear down the transmission two remove what I left from the failed bearings.

So after a few hours and some patients it is ready to put back in the car first thing in the morning wish me luck

There are a lot of new cars coming out with cvt transmissions lately. I'm getting excited about it- tuning them SHOULD be "easy"- even if they don't have easily swappable rollers like ours, I bet the cvt control "unit" may be programmable or swappable.

Well what's neat about this CVT is it uses hydraulic pressure on a large piston to close the identical variators and controls all of that through a simple valve body that reminds me of an ABS pump the ECU actually makes it all happen there is no TCM which is cool because of the simplicity so that being said you could control the transmission with something stand alone all you need is to monitor vehicle speed and throttle position you could also use a grade sensor to alow no movement on the gas pedal for up and down hills basically changing ratio.


Ready for torque converter. Then Flywheel and almost done.

I had no idea that they used a CVT in the 500. They are nice cars.

It moves but I'm finding more issues like a binding rear differential and a junk electronic throttle body but the hard part is over at this point the owner may decide to just sell it. I'm going to take another look at it tomorrow. Have a good night guys.

SWEET!! Its alive turns out the differential is fine got it all freed up and working great now I will need to find out why the alternator isn't charging the battery? Lol its complete with a broken oil dipstick.

Alt is out its hard to see but got some smoked stator wires waiting for a new one.

Well my dad has no luck he got the only alt the junk yard had and it was wrong so I grabbed an old alt from a Lincoln town car that I replaced last year and it has the same stator,rotor and regulator I might have to build a good one out of the two of them the only difference is the frame.
