The wife found this fugly biatch in the yard. She went outside to go somewhere and a few seconds later I hear her scre atmetowheel my arse out there. When I got outside she was frozen in place and all the color had left her face. She just pointed. I followed her finger and finally found this fugly biatch. Care to guess what she was( yes,she met my wheelchair wheel. Repeatedly) I honestly didn't know black widows lived around here. Skeevy little things. Black widow venomis said to be 15 times as poisonous as rattle snake venom....

According to maps online, they're supposed to be nowhere near me... except for the little area right where i am on the Delmarva peninsula. They're definitely here. I had a black widow crawl out from somewhere on the gas pump I was using last year. Before that I hadn't seen any for a while, but used to see them a couple of times a year long ago when I was hoeing... no, no... like taking care of a big garden in the summer for a produce stand.

Sometimes it seems the wildlife is out to get you! We started getting false widows here a few years ago. I blame global warming. Funny thing is We have one of the worlds most venomous spiders. The Daddy long legs. Nobody has ever been bitten by one as it can't open it's mouth wide enough! We don't really get much bad stuff in the U.K. We have a type of viper called an Adder. Looks a little like a rattle snake, but can be from a green shade right up to black. Used to see a lot where I used to live.

Over the last 10 years I have noticed an increase in black widows around these parts. My work takes me under houses occasionally. They will do their best to hide or run away from you if they can. Also once they are established in an area, they are hard to get rid of. Hope I never get bit by one. A few years back I picked up a plastic tote in the back yard and moved it about 6' to a new location, felt "something" under the handle with my finger tip. I took a look and found one of the biggest black widows I have ever seen in the handle recess, I had actually pinned it there with my finger tip while moving the tote.

I have lived in KY for 25 years. This is the first one I have seen. I knew we had brown recluse and plenty of them. Actually the jails around here have been over run by brown recluse spiders. Evil little friggers. We have some gnarly a$$ jumping spiers here, big as the palm of your hand. Even those don't crep me out as bad as that widow did. At least we don't have those gawd awful camel spiders ...
EDIT: That last bit was a joke on the myth of this species. Most don't grow beyond 4cm.
