Here in NC: "In the state of North Carolina you must be at least 16 years of age to operate a scooter on North Carolina highways or public vehicular areas. Scooters with a motor size of 50cc, or less, with no external shifting device and driven at 30 miles per hour or less on level surfaces do not require a drivers license, be registered, inspected, or covered by liability insurance. A motorcycle safety helmet is required by law when operating any scooter on North Carolina highways." carolinafunmachines.com/ncscooterlaws.aspxIn some other states however, they say "50cc or over" require a license. This is why it is VITAL to have an MCO that states 49.5cc no matter where you live in regardless of the size motor is in it. The cop that stopped me said "you were doing 45 going UPHILL" Before that I said that well we are not on level ground as the law states. He said "well it must not have the CAPABILITY of going over 30mph." The law does not say that and i would have been glad to go to court over it.

I live in North Carolina and the law here states that for moped/Scooter riders of 49cc or less a operators license is not required nor is insurance. The only restriction is that you have to be at least 16 years old and it can not exceed 30mph on flat ground. My wife is a insurance agent and we checked into it before purchasing ours. Most of the people you see riding them around here have had the drivers license revoked due to DUI's. So they have developed the name liquor cycle. I just checked and Virginia is the same for their laws on scooters. Here is a link where you can check every state. www.motorscooters.com/scooter_laws.htmlI realize that scooters have earned the name "liquor cycle" here in NC but thats just not fair. Gasoline prices are crazy. I have a Valid NCDL and 2 trucks that can be seen in my pics and videos. Cops love to pull me hoping I am drunk.

Yeah, I think you can get the same fines as someone driving a car with no license if you get caught. Up to $500 and 60 days in jail for driving without a license. If your license is suspended it's up to $1,000 and 1 year in jail. Both will get you a lot of points on your record and insurance and keep you from getting a license for longer. I think quite a few folks do it, because they think they can't get pulled over on a scooter. All it takes is a tail light bulb to go out one night or something like that though, even if you ride safe and otherwise legal at all times. I got pulled over one night because the cop thought my tail light's color was off. It was unwarranted, but it still required presentation of my license.

Yeah, I forgot about that. You have to have some sort of valid license/permit at any rate. Can't just ride one like a bicycle as some folks think. I had a customer at one point that had no clue the laws weren't the same as a bicycle.
