Scooter smartphone mount.

Well I said I would not use my Samsung Note 4 for this but I ended up doing it anyways.

I purchased this mount and I wan not happy the way it held my phone. It just did not grip the phone enough for me to feel comfortable tooling down the road and it holding when hitting bumps.





So I started with this. Phone mount, 3/8" split collar, and Otter Box clone craddle(3 for 10 bucks)





It was nice that the metal bracket was removable from the plastic(welding involved)




Welded and installed. I also plastic-weld(epoxy) the metal bracket to the plastic for extra added piece of mind seeing there were only 3 screws holding the bracket on. I slotted the bracket as well as used longer screws for the split collar and painted




Then I gutted the phone mount and removed any unnecessary parts for weight savings and extra speed. LOL




Till I ended up with just this.



Then I modded the phone cradle. Removed the clip and sanded the back flat. I also cut out a window so that the rear camara will work while mounted in the cradle. 




Then I mounted the phone cradle to the phone mount using the same holes the mount was held together with. I transferred those holes to the cradle and counter sunk the holes to the heads for the head of screws to be flush. I also used plastic-weld epoxy the glue the two pieces together as well(more piece of mind)




Final results.






Note the cutout in the cradle for rear camera. Now I can use the speed/overlay apps(aka dash cam apps)



There is a method to my madness sometimes. 

My only dislike, the flex mount tends to be a bit flexible for recording with the phone while riding, but guess it a plus for shock absorption.

I use a genuine Otter Box, but the "real" cradles are kinda pricey to be cutting up. What I paid for the phone, I didn't go cheap on the holder.

The clones are a little cheaper(flexible and the plastic feels a little thinner) but when its bolted to the phone mount(screwed and glued) its a lot stronger for sure.

FYI, I also picked up this mount too.





The phone is a Galaxy Nexus(first gen. It was the phone I originally planned on using. I found it on the side of the road missing the battery(was scattered in pieces) Long story short, the battery life sucks, display is too small(for my eyes).

The mount is great other than the silicon corner bands(blue)tend to slip off(hence the use of tie wraps top and bottom)

This is great for clamping on the hand grip for doing GPS speed verification & ect. The down sides is it takes half the hand grip. I would not recommend for long rides(I like having the whole grip) The side holder hit the volume up/down button on the phone I ended up modding the jelly case and removing the molded button.
