So I changed weights this morning. From 6g sliders to a 7/6 mix. Everything was normal looking; Everything passed inspection. Then as I'm scooting on my lunch break and then again on the way home I would feel slipping from a stop (first time for that). Just off the line and really only past half open throttle. So I would lightly twist until I was rolling then nail it. Rpms would hold high until 45ish and then settle down for a few and raise back up after 50. I've ran this setup exactly as described for a long time and tried using a heavier spring... Blah blah I wanted my known-to-work setup back so I did just that. I decided to clean and inspect everything when I got home and found the variator face all scratched up... Little tiny Knicks. See the pictures. The belt looks fine! It's almost brand new, just around 100 miles. I do run an open CVT but I've been blasting off road for a long time and have never seen this until today.

Road grit embedded in the belt.

All it takes is one hard particle but in this case it is probably more. Maybe he found a diamond mine. I have seen it in belt drives for industrial applications. It really isn't a good idea to run an open CVT. It is also a safety issue, -an errant pants leg could chew up a leg big time.

But on a serious note, I want to run a vent tube from the fan to the front of the CVT cover to help with forced cooling.

Yeah, pants are needed in Florida. Road rash is very unforgiving.
Anything you take away from the fan before the engine fins reduces engine cooling.
I have a warm air tube from my engine cover, after the engine fins, to my pod filter for warm air induction to help prevent carb icing, which can even occur in Florida.
I also have an air scoop on my CVT intake to bring in cold air from in front of the engine.

No clue what did that but.....it would probably only take one little piece of steel or something getting stuck in the belt considering it goes around so many times.
See if a tiny sliver of steel wire got pressed into the belt somewhere? Might be easy to miss.
Dunno. Speculation of course.
