acquired a qt50 recently without a headlamp installed. The bike has no spark. Is the lack of a connection at the headlamp the culprit?

The Yamahopper(QT50) has a funky ignition system. The one I worked on needed the battery installed to run. You turn the key to start position and that does something with the spark(timing or makes the spark stronger). With the key in this position the engine will start and not rev up fully till you turn the key to the run position. You also can not start it with the key in the run position.

The headlight shouldn't effect the spark at all. My last one had all the lights and anything else it didn't need cut off* and it still ran fine
*I was 13, couldn't afford a dirt bike so hacked up old scooters to thrash around the countryside, QT50's can jump amazingly well haha!

Is it one with the taillight wired such that it won't run without it?

Solved New spark plug. Kicked right over.
Previous owner said plugs kept fouling. My next step is to drain the tank and put some good gas in it. The oiler is disconnected so ill of course run pre mix.
