I've got to remove my flywheel to replace the crank seal on my QT50. I've seen wrenchs and homemade contraptions to hold it, but someone mentioned putting a penny in the gears on the other side. Is that doable? The price is right, That's for sure. I've also read that some people have luck with an oil filter wrench. Please share your experience, and what you use for flywheel removal (I got a puller from the yamaha dealership)

A rubber strap wrench works well, as does a piece of flat bar with holes drilled to bolt to where the fan was. Most times if your using an impact you don't really need to hold it with anything besides a gloved hand.

You can get the right tool for about 10.00 to 12.00 dollars and you will use it many more times

yep, get the variator holding tool for the other side, I don't see how anyone works on these without one

Rope down the sparkplug hole works. Wouldn't use that method if you're using an impact though. Of course if you were using an impact for disassemble you wouldn't need a holder

I have an old pin wrench for a grinder that I can use, with a bit of tube for leverage, on the clutch but I'm too worried about breaking fins to use them to hold the variator. I've had decent luck using an old drive belt wrapped around the variator pulley and twisted up super tight with a big screwdriver to hold it, but the old rope in the cylinder is easier.

I tried a strap wrench but the the flywheel is inclosed on a qt50 so it didn't work. I am probably getting another harbor freight 12v impact wrench to replace the one that stopped working.
I think ill see about establishing a neighborhood tool library.

I eventually found something in my dads pile of tools that I've been slowly taking from my moms house for the last 10 years. Its like he was pointing to the tool from beyond. I'm not even sure what the tool is but it looks like it attaches to a pole of some sort...maybe some sort of paint brush holder, I dunno. As he used to say "sometimes you just have to hindermachen something"
Mom and I looked it up (well, I looked it up...she's 86) and there is no such word as hindermachen. Closest we came was hausenmachen which means home made.
He wasn't fluent in german. From what I gather, hindermachen translates to "Ass Made" I guess that's what they call "low german"

It could be related to another expression; 'Reverse engineer' something.

Hindermachen, ass made. Works for me. If you can't find the right tool just pull it out of your ass. Sounds like your father was a smart man.
