It's gear up time for my bike. And like most minarelli owners looking for more speed I am considering the gear up kit. There are primary gears and secondary gears. Which gear set should a 70cc 2T, big carb and race pipe go with? Also, which kit is easier to install, and by that I mean which kit doesn't require a press? Thanks for the help guys. Also isn't the primary gear set the one with the clutch shaft? I seem to be confused by the 190mech tutorial? 49ccscoot.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=transtech&action=display&thread=945 Was what he installed the secondary gear set, B/C there wasn't a clutch shaft in that tutorial.

You can't see the clutch driveshaft, but it's there. That is a primary swap. Not sure if they come with the whole shaft or if that has to be pressed on to the old one too? The only gear swaps I've done on a mina are when I have used the whole gear set from another engine so it all just drops in easy. I would assume both swaps would require pressing. I think there are some companies putting out gears that are already pressed together, but they were expensive. I could be wrong, but I believe I've seen those somewhere.

and you may run into issues with the pre pressed sets as some scoots use diffrent shafts
i know a lot of the pre pressed set ups dont work on the zuma

I messed up. I messed up by installing 70 series tires on my Zuma (10% smaller), I simply wasn't *thinking*, or maybe I was *thinking how much neater they would look. So it became up-gear time for me. I used a Malossi Upgear Kit: Ratio 16/40 (30% up-gear). It came with a input, or clutch shaft (with gear cast in), and a loose gear (for pressing on a shaft). The gears are straight cut, so they are a bit nosier than stock. You will need a press. What form that press takes is up to you. You will have to press the clutch shaft out of the cover/bearing, and you will have to press a gear off and a gear on the intermediate shaft. You will also have to remove the rear wheel and axle (so that you can get the intermediate gear out to change the gear on the intermediate shaft). I used a ball joint press and electric impact. www.harborfreight.com/3-in-1-ball-joint-u-joint-c-frame-press-service-kit-38335.htmlI happen to own one of these, but if you have any 4 wheel drive buddies they will likely own one, and most garages have one. They are useable for a variety of jobs: ball joints, U joints, air brake anchor pins, spring bushings, and small king pins. Very likely you will need a cover gasket too (and seals, clutch shaft and axle, if you are so inclined).
