Hello All,
I am trying to figure out a charging issue. 2002 Vino 2 horizontal minarelli 13,xxx miles (yes you read that correctly.) No electrical mods. I checked my voltage at the battery and at idle its only getting about 6.5 volts which is low obviously. When I rev it up the voltage drops down to 2.5-3 volts. Yes the meter is set on Volts DC. The battery is totally crap I know that. At idle my horn and turn signals work but when I am riding nothing works. Even with the battery being bad the charging system should still be putting out over 13 v at idle and no more than 15 v at speed. I find it odd that this would happen since it maintains a steady voltage at idle and all the 12v items work at idle.
Has anyone experienced this issue? Is it the battery or is it the stator, or the rectifer? or something else? The wiring harness and stator are original to my knowledge.
Thanks.

Change your battery, it's most likely what's screwing up your charging and voltage values.

Check your grounds. You could be having a ground problem. Also, hook your meters ground lead up to the negative battery terminal not the frame. You may need to buy a new ignition setup. 13,000-something miles is pretty good for the stock Yamaha ignition.

When I took the readings I had the positive lead to the positive terminal and the negative lead to the negative terminal on the battery.

If a DC charging system it could be the stator. WOW! thirteen thou? OR, it could be the rectifier/regulator. Fairly easy to check the regulator, if you can find or borrow a used one from a friend or local scoot shop with proper connectors. Plug it in a try again. Unfortunately, it could be both. One bad from the other gone bad.

Yeah Jordan...if the next one has the same issue, it is likely a stator problem...or wiring in between, but less likley.

I swapped batteries an it seemed to fix the issue so I just bought one. Its en route. I will post an update if I find out otherwise. Thanks guys.
