Hello all,
I just recently picked up an 04' Aprilia Rally with 2800 miles on it, fully stock scooter. From what i take it, its a lot more rare in the US than I originally thought. I have issues starting the scooter and when it does manage to start after using carb clean, it wants to die on its own. I need to keep playing with the throttle to keep it alive. I feel its fuel related. I took apart the entire carb and cleaned it all put it back together and still have the same issue.
I think the air/fuel and the idle screw will need to be adjusted at the very least. I cannot seem to find the correct factory adjustments online.
I can get it to start with some carb clean sprayed into the air box, it will hesitate, and i need to do quick throttle movements to get it running and able to take off. If I just twist the throttle slowly it will die out. I need to do quick, full throttle twists in order for the revs to climb and for it to be rideable. In order to keep it running, the throttle needs to be played with constantly. The a/f screw is essentially screwed in all the way at the moment. I know thats not right. The one thing i didnt do when cleaning the carb is take out the a/f screw and the idle screw to blow carb clean through those orifices.
Any thoughts from you all would be very helpful!

Thanks for your help. I finally got it to idle properly. I took apart the carb once more, cleaned everything fully and reassembled, also drained the old gas and filled fresh gas. The only issue I have now is that the scooter wont start when cold, and the manual choke on it seems to make no difference when engaged. It is definitely functioning, because I tested it prior to reassembling. the cable retracts the choke properly. It will only start with a spray of carb fluid.
When I get it started with carb fluid, I can ride it just fine and it will start without issue when warmed up a bit. Any ideas?

when you try to start it cold cover the inlet on the air box. If it starts then you are too lean. If it still won't start check the plug, if it's wet then you're too rich. Its also possible that your choke isn't secured tight and when you open it to start you're letting air into the carb allowing a lean condition. All thinks to look at.

I'd like to thank you for your help. You were absolutely correct, I plugged the snorkel on the air box and it started right up. That led to me richening out the mixture. This morning I tried it, and it started right away. Its good to go! Thanks again.

Its a simple test to see where you are with the starting.
