It's a really hidden street and usually not well known by the people there. It mostly used for cutting trees, as you see at the side of the roads. But the county simply rot this street down. Poles were missing and some signs are already missing or not visible because of mother nature The way down is the usual way the visitors take for the castle Frankenstein. (It's one of the castles of the Legend of the "Frankenstein Monster" Anyway, the best thing would be to renew the surface... There will be some more videos in the next months out of the "Odenwald"-Area.

There are tours but the castle is more popular of the medieval festivals and the halloween stuff. The inside of the castle is a restaurant but I don't know how "deep" the basement of this castle is. The castle was first mentioned in 1252 .. 759 years old. The first halloween party was made by the US GIs in Darmstadt in 1971 and now it's the biggest halloween festival in Germany.
There is also a story beside of the Frankenstein stuff. The Legend of the Knight George who killed a lindworm. This lindworm terrorizes a small village on the foot of the mountain where the castle Frankenstein was. It destorys the houses and only could be quenched with young women. In a fight between Georg and the Lindworm he killed it, but also died because the lindworm injected poison into his leg. There is also a memorial of this fight at the place where it should happend, showing Georg and the Lindworm fighting.

What a wild story behind the castle, that is so interesting. As old as it is, I am surprised that it is still standing.

You got to admit the whole story behind the castle is very interesting. I found some interesting links about the castle and Mary Shelly. frankensteinia.blogspot.com/2008_02_01_archive.html"Darmstadt, Germany is home to the setting for Mary Shelley’s Gothic horror novel, Frankenstein. This castle was the 18th century home of Lord Konrad Dippel Von Frankenstein. There are many theories about Dippel, including one that he sold his soul for eternal life. In reality, Dippel was a highly controversial alchemist in whose laboratory the colour Prussian Blue was discovered. Maybe his enemies tried to ruin his reputation with the legend about the monster created in his laboratory. Visit Frankenstein Castle during Halloween to get the maximum scare factor, as an elaborate monster-themed theater show is performed, along with actors who lurk in the castle shadows." www.live-like-a-german.com/points_of_interest/show/313/darmstadt/ruins-of-frankenstein-castle

Goosey: No the way I chose for going up is a regular road, so you can go up and down but it's prohibited for busses or trucks. They have to take the way up, I chose for going down. (4:00) Usually I would go a bit faster on the whole route, but it was the first time for my friend with the Aprilia SR50R. So I just go like 75%. marshinman: The picture you've posted must be a other castle frankenstein (the tower is missing). There are 3 or 4 Frankenstein Castles in Germany, but the story you heard with the monster and stuff is the story about Konrad Dippel. The castle had many owners over the 700 years. But after many wars the small castle was run down and was used for a home for invalids. Around 1750 there was a myth about treasures somewhere near or in the castles so the people destoryed everything they could just to find the treasures. After this the woman of the adminstrator of the castles sold everything she could, what means really everything. Even the stones. In 19. century Ludwig III tried to restore the castle, but they destoryed it more than they rebuild. The gatetower never got a thrid floor and the living-tower never had a roof like this.
