They call it snow? Whatever it is it's pretty cold stuff. And what does accumulation mean?

Trying to post an image but even in desktop it goes back to the main page Pic works for me. They're saying maybe 9" for my area, 40-50MPH wind gusts, -2 overnight. Hard to complain too much after seeing Erie get 5 feet of snow recently and with members here deep into the negatives.... but I'd wanna move south if things got like that. I kinda like seeing snow on occasion through winter, but life without riding for months on end; no thanks.

I've been tempted to mention the fact that the weather has definitely ruled out any riding. Maybe I didn't feel the need to go through with it on the grounds that most of the rest of you are going through the same thing. I even hear that Europe is going through a deep freeze.
When we got our first scooter a few years back, a Honda Metro, I found that it simply would not start in single digit F temps. I haven't even tried with the other scoots. Maybe one or two of them would even start. But I couldn't do any effective riding.
We've been getting several double digit below zero lows lately and there's more to come. It's inhumane.

I got the TMAX up to 86MPH while riding when it was 10 degrees on New Year's day and the NWS calculator says that's a windchill of -22. Then I see PIG posting that the outside temp is -35 where he is. Can't even imagine just walking out the door and feeling even colder than I was riding at speed. It's cold enough that it hurts if any skin is exposed even briefly and my face hurt after 40 minutes behind a helmet. You guys up there must wear full riding gear just to walk to your 4WD trucks... or plows/bulldozers. Whatever you ride around in the far north.

Many yes ago now. They explained how at 0°c the faster you rode, the colder it got. It was quite an eye opener. Even at 60-70mph you can really feel the difference.

Our bathroom sink drain froze up about a week ago now. The bathroom is an add-on addition to the existing house and it's cold underneath that floor. With the forecast as it is, I don't expect it to have a chance to thaw for a month. For shaving, I carry a bowl of hot water in there. We brush our teeth in the kitchen sink.
When the temp gets into the single digits Fahrenheit I need to run just a little bit of cold water in the shower in order to keep that supply from freezing. I've been running that cold water for at least a week now. We've been in this house 25 years now. I've never had to run it that long before.
The worst winter I've ever experienced was 1976-77. The deep, deep freeze came in a little before Christmas and it stayed around til Easter. And the wind blew strong and steady the whole time. Our water supply line from the well to the house froze early and didn't thaw until spring. We fetched and carried water all winter. This was in Michigan. But I get the feeling that a good chunk of the USA experienced pretty much the same thing. Some of you likely remember that winter.
(A friend of mine had to fetch and carry fuel oil most of the next winter. That was due to extreme snow. I helped quite a bit. But I have fonder memories of that. And it's a whole 'nother story anyway.)
I'm a guy who mostly prefers winter to summer. But I sure don't want to live through anything like 76-77 ever again. Unless this winter we're in takes a milder turn that stays, then this will be runner-up in terms of misery.

Try pouring a little bit of alcohol or saltwater down the drain, maybe that'll clear it of ice.
