I'm wondering what type of oil everybody's using, or is it necessary to use motorcycle oil in my 4stroke

No, simply because you don't have a "wet" clutch. "Normal" automotive oil now has "friction modifiers" that plays badly with a wet clutch (as found in most motorcycles), but because you don't have a wet clutch in your scoot... it doesn't matter.
Most of us are using synthetic, but a good dino oil should be ok (SHELL ROTELLA T @ 20w40 springs to mind), I use Mobil1 in the 20-50 variety. You don't wish to go too light on the weight, as air cooled engines tend to run hotter than liquid cooled ones.

As frequently as oil must be changed in these little cheap 4ts I question the economics of filling with expensive synthetics. I doubt that any main line dinogoo would do you much harm. Rotella is very good at maintaining good ring seal and withstanding extreme pressures.

if you have an air cooled engine motorcycle oils will hold up a bit better to the heat as they are desinged for air cooled engines
air cooled engines like to heat the oil up good and brake it down fast

For years I have used Klotz oil in my bikes and I use it in my scooter. I use the 2 stroke stuff in my wife scooter. Here is a link to their website www.klotzlube.com/products.asp?cat=4You can still purchase it and some motorcycle shops.

I agree with stepthrutuner. If you change it out often then it doesn't matter. I would never use some cheap 99¢ store oil. I use Chevron Supreme 10-40 oil or Shell 10-40, Pennzoil. Whatever is on sale. I buy the 5 quart bottles. I should get a 55 gallon drum as much as I go through on scooters and my cars.

I used Shell Rotella T in my GY6 50and changed it frequently. If you run across a scoot or ped that uses the pitbike/xr50 type of 4T, they need motorcycle oil.

Just my 2cents but, I use Shell 15w40 from day 1. I would go ahead and get that 5qt jug. It will save you money in the long run. Just change it out every 500/800 km Religiously. Remember there is no oil filter. Some prefer full synth Mobil 1 but, kind of defeats the purpose of a synth changing it so frequently IMO. If there is a place for oil to leak, any kind a Synth. will find it.

I change my oil every 500 miles rain or shine so any name brand will do because the oil never has the chance to break down. I have read that synthetics can damage the cheap import engines do to the way it try to penitate the metal and the inconcises in the recylce metal the chinisee use.
