So ive been struggling to figure out whats going on with my starter. When I try to start my gy6, the solenoid clicks. I have replaced and charged the battery with a new one. I get over 12v from both the frame, engine and starter from my voltmeter. I've tried shorting a screwdriver across the solenoid posts, and get nothing, which I found odd. I had a aftermarket starter in there. When I pulled it out it had milky looking grease on it. I have tried swapping out different starters from some other bone yard scooter and get the same results. I have also tried different solenoids. But since I cant jump the posts it has to be the starter, right? Could I be looking at a seized up starter clutch?

When it clicks it can't turn the starter, usually because it doesn't have enough to juice. Hookup your voltmeter to the battery and it should read 13.4 or so. Press the starter and it'll dip... If it dips lower than 9 volts the battery is no good. It's usually the battery

Also search this forum, this question has been solved many times before.

I tested the battery again. I read 13.4v and stays basically the some while pushing the starter. I have been reading forums all over the place and I've tried everything. Do you have to have a ground directly to the frame? I added a second wire from the battery negative to the engine to be sure. The frame is also grounded. My main question is if anybody know if the starter clutch is the problem here. Either seized up or just too hard to spim

Could be the coil or the starter. If you grounded the engine to the battery terminal that should work even if the frame had a bad ground.

On most of the bikes I have the frame isn't directly grounded. They run wires everywhere, and sometimes the splices inside the harness go bad. I'd grab a meter and start checking for continuity on the wires, or at least check voltage at the starter while using the starter as a ground for the meter. In fact, most of my scooters have a ground wire that goes to a bolt on or close to the starter. Do you still have that wire?

I've test the ground all of the bike including the starter and its good. Think its worth running a ground to the bolt of the starter?

Couldn't hurt. But if you've got ground and 12volts at the starter during crank somethings up with the starter imo.

The boys have it covered...but I have had that same issue with my Thai build Yamaha Mio 125. It's a 2014 but have replaced the starter solenoid twice. Both the OEM and it replacement came in Yamaha packages, but made in a land far to the north. Yamaha claims to have sourced new ones since...many complaints here.
