Hey All, I am resurrecting a scooter that was dunked in a flood. The carby was full of water like this So I have ultrasonically cleaned, scrubbed etc to this Except I am not sure which spring is the accelerator pump spring and which one is the air cut off spring, harder spring (left) or softer (right) for the air cut off? Also where does the air cut of spring go? It doesn't really fit under the diaphragm like the manual says, It looks like it goes on the outside under the cover. Im not sure the manual is right as the accelerator pump section uses the wrong image Also if I buy a new carby is the 24mm cvk a worthwhile upgrade? I can get a 21mm but am unsure if it is a true 21 or a 18 with the throat after the butterfly simply reamed to 21mm... What mods do I need to do to fit it to a 72cc barrel? Im told it wont fit the 50cc manifold. Will a 125cc manifold fit a 50 (72cc) barrel bolt pattern? Thanks!

I can't help you with the original carb (I bought a junk scooter that had carb repairs via a hammer before I got it) and the manifold was cracked beside the clamp (and likely sucking air).
I would go with the softer spring in the air cut-off as it is vacuum operated.
To put a 125-150cc GY6 carb on there you will need a manifold from a 125-150 GY6. I am not sure a bigger carb will do you much good as the hole in the stock head is 19mm. Your air cleaner won't fit though you can use an aftermarket one, and the intake manifold is "clocked" differently making the carb point either directly rearwards, or forwards (I have seen "clocking adapters somewhere, but I forget where). The cooling shroud may, or may not, need trimming (around the larger manifold) with a carpet knife. The throttle cable will be different (short) and you have to modify the cable bracket on the carb. If you choose to point your carb rearwards you must have a rear inner fender to keep water/dirt out of the air filter area. If you have under seat storage you might lose it. So far the stock jetting is working out for me with a K+N air filter, but I have low hours on this set-up.

Have a look at this rebuild video:
At timestamp 3:08 it shows the air cut off spring and at timestamp 4:59 it shows the acceperator pump spring. From what I see, the cut off spring looks thicker.

I took apart one of my carbs. Both of those springs were the same length, but the Air Cut spring was the thickest wire and the strongest. RD

Thanks heaps ppl, its a shame the manual is so incorrect, makes me worried about the torque settings and clearances too

The only purpose it serves is enriching the fuel when you back off the throttle at speed.

Hello Everybody! Great job on the carb cleaning! I have a tao tao 50 2010 and it started running rough so I changed the stock plug with an NGK and it helped a bit but it seemed as if it stopped gaining power at half throttle so I took my carb off and intended to clean it too. However, they broke the tips off so there is no way to take the bottom bowl off. I did notice when I took the cover off the fuel pin was bent so I did my best to straighten it out. Do you think that could have been the issue with the loss of power? I cleaned the rest the best I could and am going to "try" and put it back together and on. I can't believe here in NYC I can't find someone who repairs scooters. I have been to eight (8) auto shops and they wouldn't touch it. I figured it wouldn't be nothing for a real mechanic to fix but I guess I was wrong. I believe I am just going to end up buying a new carb. I am going to try and type the #'s on the carb anmd see if I can find the correct match b/c I can't measure the mm's. Or should I just order a carb that fits a 49cc scoot?
