Hello, First post and a Noob to Scoots, but not mechanics. I have a TaoTao 50 with 1300Kilometers. I was driving it just fine one day, and the next was off. Here is the story. It wouldn't Idle, so I kept it running. It ran just fine if the RPM's were up, but if they lowered near idle, it would die. To restart the engine, I had to give it full throttle to rev over idle rpm. Then it was fine while it was running at about 20 mph. It would hit 45 still, no lack of power. One time, It did stay idling for about 30 seconds, then died. So, For fact, The compression is good, cam/valves are properly operating, New NGK plug that is properly gaped, and has a small spark, not impressive, but can see a faint one. I have sprayed starter fluid directly into the intake with no fire still, It did try it's hardest and started to go at full throttle, but couldn't get up enough rpm to start. Carb is getting fuel to it as well. I have heard that the CDI can cause this. Any help would be appreciated.

ditto here...my taotao doing almost the same thing...getting harder to start. Takes off fine for 10 secs then dies. Start again and gradually get up to 15mph then sometimes it seems to "clear" and the scoot runs fine. I was think new carb...its still under warranty...but I gues the cdi could degrade right? Gradually ...any help would be appreciated

OK, Adjusted the valves to spec, and still no change.

Disassemble and clean the carbie. Sounds like idle circuit is impaired.

that would make sense, however, it will not start with starter fluid or directly putting gas in the intake port, regardless of amounts

The stator is putting out 68-70ACV at slow crank with weaker battery. So stator is fine.

What kind of spark gap should these make at cranking speeds?

OK, Compression is at 90psi at idle throttle, and 120psi at WOT. Spark plug is gapped at .028-9 in. Pulling the carb off to inspect at the moment. ALSO, Drained and replaced fuel. Would there be a reason for that much of a compression change with throttle open/closed?

Interesting question. Sufficient compression to start though, I'd say.

Ordering a new no Rev CDI and "perfomance" coil today just to be on the safe side. It's worth the $35 to find out. If the CDI is bad, but still produces a spark, it may be firing at the wrong time i.e. too far advanced or retarded.

I replaced a CDI on a Tao Tao clone a while back. It would start and run and then die and eventually not start at all. After cleaning the carb twice and replacing the fuel filter I eventually tried a new CDI and that fixed it.

I do appreciate all of your suggestions. I will report back after the parts come in. It's nice to find a forum that isn't full of nonsense, I.E., you ask a question like "My 50 won't start" and you get this response "Hey, check your tire pressure and try to push it on an incline to make sure that the ignition is getting a good spark" Again, thanks.

Just had about the same problem...brand new TaoTao 50cc......Starting running crappy....got worse and worse....eventually it would not start.....adjusted valves....runs like a champ now..better than when it was new...2 weeks ago
