so here recently when i try to accelerate from a dead stop i get this really weird grinding/rubbing noise coming from the cvt. at first i thought the belt was slipping as it wraps around the bushing in the variator, but when i took the cover off i really didn't see any evidence of this so i pull the variator out and find the three 5g rollers have flat spots but the three 5.8g rollers do not. could this be whats causing this noise? are there any other symptoms from having these flat spots?

I doubt flat spots would cause a grinding noise.
I've seen where the hole in the variator gets worn and then the variator can wobble on the bushing. In other words, there's a sleeve in the hole that will get worn and sloppy.
Are the three little back plate guides still in there and in good shape?

Flat rollers can cause all sorts of poor performance issues, but like Fox said, they shouldn't make any grinding noises. Check everything over in there for any signs of wear or contact.

first off, thank you for the quick replies. i can always count on at least one or two answers almost immediately and i really appreciate it guys.
grinding is probably not the best way to describe the noise, i mean its more of a rubbing noise with a vibration and when it does this the scooter will jerk forward almost lifting the front tire off the ground..... kind of like if the teeth on the belt wore down so much that they don't come together all the way as it wraps around the sleeve in the center of the variator. yes the three triangle bushing are still there. and the variator is almost brand new the only sings of wear is on the face there is some black streaking, and on the inside of the back plate where the rollers hit it.
thanks for the help

I think you should check the rear pulley. Make sure that there isn't a broken spring or something.

What Dave said, sounds like a clutch problem.

got some more bad news. my scoot stalled out at a stop light yesterday and now it wont start so the variator problem is on the back burner for now. its got 3500 miles/kilometers or what ever. so far ive made sure its got spark and fuel, and ive adjusted the valves and even sprayed starter fluid in it and still no start! im leaning towards either low compression or a weak spark. what do you guys think?

Do a compression test. If you don't have a tester or can't borrow one, hold your thumb over the spark plug hole and crank the engine over. You should feel a lot of pressure that wants to push your thumb away.

yeah i tried the thumb over the spark plug hole yesterday, it did push my thumb off the hole... but it still seems kinda weak. (not that i know what its suppose to feel like.) I'm gonna hafta see if advanced has one i could borrow tomorrow

:banghead: OK, I'm a dumbass. i guess when i adjusted the valves i made 'em way to tight. somehow they ended up at .037 which i thought should have been OK anyways :dunno: and apparently i had a ""stuck jet"" in the carburator..... is that even possible?? i didn't think jets had moving parts to get stuck :stumped: i think they were just trying to get more money outta me. either way i managed to get outta there with only having to pay for the valve adjustment.

A clogged jet maybe?
