first post. i have been reading alot on the board and all i can say is"wow". I got a vento zipr3i turbocam off craigslist a couple monthes back for free. original owner thought it needed ignition work. i did nothing to it and have been riding it eversince. almost 300 miles. it did stumble twice like it wasnt getting fuel, but nothing since.
it now has 3537 miles and i know its getting due for maintenance. tranny oil,new belt, etc.
the problem is how much i weigh. 375#. the scooter pulls me good around town, and will pull me as fast as 43mph(had my wife pace me in her car to check). it does work really hard on the hills and slows down quite abit. not at all unexpected, but after reading so much on here i know it can do better, even if it requres more maintenance. i am not looking to improve top speed, but i dont want to lose it either. nor am i looking to gain a quicker take off. it actually does pretty good. it would be nice to be able to maintain a little better speed and throttle responce on the hills.
I am thinking derestrict the variator if it has a washer, and a 1500# torque spring to start. and mabey lighter weights. am I on the right track? Thanks for any advice. :scoot2:

That's a helluva deal you got! Where are all the free scoots on my local craigslist?!? I'm not sure how to tell you to climb hills faster without gaining or losing any other performance. lol A stiffer contra spring should help, but you might be taking off faster too. It's not a bad thing, you can always use less throttle to pretend it's still as slow as stock if you'd like. Torque is what will really have you climbing hills a lot better and makes riding more enjoyable to me... but that means engine work or an engine swap, and that's a lot more money than some CVT work. I'd guess either a 1000 or 1500 contra. You can find kits from Autotech355 on eBay that include all three (1000, 1500, 2000) fairly cheap along with 3 sets of clutch springs to get you off the line faster if you so desire. Stiffer clutch springs can help sometimes with the responsiveness if you're having trouble boggging low in RPM because the clutch should slip a little and keep you from really bogging down. If the variator has a washer in it, removing it won't change hills much. If it's in place, it will actually help initial take off a little by letting the belt ride lower in the front pulley. If it's not there, it should help top speed a bit by letting the belt ride a little higher in the front pulley. The restrictor washer isn't as bad as it's made out to be, but most folks really want all the speed they can get.

thanks. so it sound like i need to experamint a littlewith the torgue springs and clutch till i get nearer to what i like. the real problem is i am a real gearhead from way back, and would like nothing more then a stroked 90 to replace the little 50. its taking alot of self control to not just tear ito it. for now,i need to keep it reliable, and everyday, anywhere usable. Again, thanks and nice forum.

Good luck with that. I'm the same way. I said I'd leave my scoot alone when I got my first one. You can see how well that turned out. lol

The down side to that set is you only get 4 different weight rollers. You'd be better to try to find a tuning set, I think autotech355 sells them. I know how you feel, I'm hitting in at 360# and I'm running a 2000k contra and 6.5g sliders. I'm not saying that setup will work for you but it works for me, good off the line response due to the 2000k contra and top end due to the 6.5g sliders.
