My daughter has given me her Galaxy S5. It has apps on it. So far I have downloaded this forum to it what now looks completely different and is taking a time to learn I managed to phone someone at 02.30 this morning and couldn't find the button to cancel it. Only a third or less of my contacts transferred across when my daughter helped and try as I might when people do text or ring I can't add them to phone. So when people ring re work I have my old phone with me so I can scroll through the numbers to see who it was 😁. I think I may go back to my windows 8 Nokia phone for a while or take time out to learn this one. A month should do.

Ha milly, we are Mac/Apple/iPhone users...and at ripening age, getting uber tired of the incessant updates from Apple, many of which mean nothing. Ohh, but if you ignore the updates for too long, your battery consumption goes to shite.
I use my Google map app, weather, Convert, Notes and a few games to pass time at airports and such. I get few weekly calls and texts from family here...everyone else is in other countries.
If I had no phone? Might not miss it. No tools? No electrical testing? No calculator? No computer? I would be in sad shape!

Yep lots of undates instead of say no to whatever once its everytime. To add contact from the numbers not transferred I have to allow my location to be switched on which I find odd so in theory if I deny access I cannot add contacts. Have switched back to the Nokia Looney till I go to uni and get a degree to learn how to use the other one. I think I will be retired by then in a few years 😊

Phone technology never ceases to amaze me. I prefer the Android OS myself. The learning curve can be pretty tough on us oldies but it eventually gets easier, sometimes. I have a collection of apps that I find indispensable. They definitely make my life easier. Just last night I half figured out a feature on my camera app that helps me MATCH 2 shots. I was trying to compare my scoot visually with 2 different seats on it. So you take a picture of the scoot with one seat installed, switch seats and take the next picture. As you are taking the second picture the first picture is a semi transparent overlay in the viewfinder. This allows you to easily match camera angle and distance of the second picture to the first picture you took. After you have both shots, it will quickly switch between both pictures a dozen times or so. You end up with the effect of the seat changing but the scooter never appears to move because they are matched shots. Kinda cool! I also love an app called Convert Pad. It allows you convert almost anything to anything else. I use it for everything from speed conversions and torque settings to weight conversions. There are a couple other apps I use daily for controlling the A/C at the warehouse and the lighting. And also an app that allows me to use my billing package for business on the fly, I could not do without that one.

I'm not very smart phone literate either. While I do use a few apps, I don't need them all the time. And Android has a feature that works well for me. It's called "Ultra Power Saving Mode". It can be found in the "Settings" folder.
I don't know if iPhone has something similar. But I'd be willing to bet that it does.
When in Ultra Power Savings most apps are shut off. You still have voice phone, text, plus a couple of other features, such as calculator. You can even choose a couple of them. My battery lasts for twenty days in this mode and my phone isn't constantly, constantly updating and doing other mysterious things.
When I do switch in into 'normal' operation mode it does update some apps. But it's not very intrusive. And it helps keep my phone a whole lot more calm.
Semi-related: The other day I googled 'health care under the ACA'. I might be buying insurance that way before long. I visited one of the sites that came up. I vaguely remember clicking "Yes" on some icon that asked if I'd like a quote.
My phone has gone crazy. After about day two I estimated that the number of phone calls and texts I'd received from insurance agents all over the map had reached 50. It's a few days later and I'm not bothering to calculate. But the number is over 100. Even on Sunday my phone kept ringing and ringing and ringing. My gmail inbox is also being flooded with insurance spam, though to a lesser degree.
Now I don't think the site I visited was a scam in terms of fraud. But they certainly were a scam in terms of bad faith. They weren't offering me anything. They were offering my contact info to their actual customers: a horde of hungry insurance agent wannabes, I guess.
I doubt if there's any way of putting a stop to these calls. And they're overdoing it so badly that there really ought to be a way. It's the sort of thing that makes one frown on de-regulation, I can tell you.
But this will also help me to remember, 'If you're not actually paying for it, then you're not the customer. You're the product'.
But we gotta keep this in mind even when we're simply asking for a quote? That's not good.

I'll stick with my old as dirt Galaxy S3. Fortunately I've gotten rid of that dreadful Gingerbread OS and am running a rooted debkoated version ofNougat (7.1.2) now with a custom kernel that's allowed me to over clock from 1512 up to 1640 with no Ill effects, I've also under volted on a global scale of -20Mv.
Its old, and kinda small, but it does everything I need it to, and has for years. I'm eagerly awaiting Lineage OS release of Android 8 Oreo for it now. They've released a few nightlys but no stable builds yet.
