Sounds like your timing got off.... Is it possible you hooked your starter up backwards?

Thomas has a good thought. If you used the starter motor and it ran backwards, I would try using the kicker which will make it turn the correct way for sure. If it runs forward doing that, then Thomas is correct.

I had a Jawa 350 2t that would do the same if timing was out.

2 strokes do this quite easily, nothing mechanical to oppose like the valve train on a 4 stroke. If its running smoothly it would probably be about the same from TDC (Top Dead Center) as normal rotation, maybe 15 to 20 degrees - except ATDC (After Top Dead Center). The last snowmobile I bought had electronic revers, push a button and the engine would come to a stop and start spinning backwards to backup. Push the button again and the engine would come to a stop and start spinning normally. It would be great if the OP could photograph the flywheel showing the ignition tab and the ignition pickup trigger coii. I don't know if Peugeot is GY6 style or not. As far as ignition timing, follow it through. 1. Flywheel key. confirm that the key is in place 2. Flywheel ignition pad. Inplace and not damaged. I would remove and make sure that you don't have loose metal inside or ontop of flywheel 3. Ignition pickup trigger coil. In place and not damaged. 4. Correct CDI. Matter o fact, make sure all components are the right ones.

the key piece of info from first post is that it runs better backwards, which to me he's either past tdc or 180 out. ignitions always try to trick me with the whole forward means retard and backwards is advance. I would double check your work.
