as per the thread title, i picked up a 2013 taotao 150cc 4t for free off craigslist ... that's the good news. the bad news is ... well , there's lots of bad news : sitting outdoors (uncovered) for 4 years with the spark plug OUT; crumbling, disconnected vacuum lines everywhere, no key; many of you have resurrected much worse i'm sure, but this is going to be a challenge for me. engine will turn over if i bridge the starter relay but there's no spark. there's a red wire with a (good) fuse that's not connected on one end. going to try to show a pic of it. i need to know where to connect the loose end.

oh yeah ... i already own a 2005 bws and there's a yamaha riva for sale that i am keeping my eye on to see if he drops the price . do you think there's a problem on the horizon ?

ok, with my limited ability to read an electrical schematic, and using a schematic not actually specific to this scooter (but hopefully close enough), i have decided that this wire is "hot" all the time. with that in mind, my plan is to connect it either to battery positive or to the hot side of the starter relay; whatever it will reach. gonna do that later today when it cools down a bit so there's still time to stop me if i am way off base here !

My guess is that goes on the battery.

ok ... connected that fused red wire to the battery, sprayed some wd40 into the brake lever switches and the engine now cranks without having to bridge the starter relay. in short, starting system is all good.
still no spark.
other electrical ... horn works, tail-light works, brake light works through both brake levers, fuel gauge works, amp (volt?) meter dips while cranking so it looks like that works too. front and rear left turn signals work, right side signals do not work at all (although the indicator works when i switch them on) ... bad flasher unit or bad switch ? will get back out there to check both bulbs after i cool down a bit. headlight does not work ... probably designed to work only with engine running ?
keep in mind that i have no key so i am doing this with the ignition switch dis-connected and a jumper wire between the red and black wires.
edit : all turn signals now working. got the switch removed enough to spray some wd40 inside it and it worked right away. would have preferred to completely dis-assemble and do a proper cleaning of the contacts, but i am working on grass at the moment and didnt want to drop a tiny spring or screw there.

so back to the real problem ... no spark.
finally found a youtube video showing how to diagnose a no-spark problem on this engine. while he wasn't working specifically on this model, and the wire colours didn't always match up with mine, i think i am zeroing in on the stator as the problem. would be nice to have some resistance values that are specific to this year/make/model. hope to have time today to at least visually inspect the stator and pickup coil.
as a footnote, a quick search on ebay shows a new stator costs about 1/3 of what i was expecting. i am starting to understand the appeal of these chinese scooters. to be fair, the taotao quality, while not impressive, looks far superior to the "no-name" chinese junk scooter that i bought last year and quickly got rid of ... "shivers" .

In case it helps...
Good luck on the specific values by make and model for Chinese scoots. If you want that, you typically have to go with a higher tier scoot with a service manual available.

Are you jumping the kill system in the plug for the ignition? Not familiar enough with the scoot to give you colors but thats usually part of the switch is to open or close that circuit.

hi, pink. i THINK i have. i am jumpering the red wire to the black. this enables me to crank the engine without a key and also to use electricals such as horn, turn signals, etc. if there is another circuit in the harness that plugs into the ignition switch that kills spark then no, i havent jumpered that.
edit : to clarify, i have disconnected the wiring harness from the ignition switch. the way i understand it, this serves to bypass the kill switch in the ignition switch itself.

have hit a bit of a wall here. needing to pull the flywheel, i tried using a steering wheel puller but the flywheel started to distort a bit (apparently the holes for mounting the fan do not double as pulling points; the metal is not beefy enough). tried calling a couple of local shops that sell scooters but they were no help at all. i am hoping that someone from the greater vancouver area might read this and advise where to get one locally, otherwise the TTRP (taotao resurrection project) is going on the back-burner while i wait weeks for the puller to arrive.
p.s. .... i need to pull the flywheel because i am getting a MASSIVE resistance value from the stator ... as in MEGA-ohms.

That canister thing looks to be part of the pair system. It's basically California epa emissions crap, and it's useless unless where you live inspects scoots before registration. A lot of people remove the pair system altogether and use a block off plate to seal the place where it attaches to the head.

thanks for that info, kagetenshi. i do not have to go through any inspection whatsoever, so i will see about removing it and blocking off where it attaches to the head. (i didn't notice any unused ports when i was sorting out the disconnected/crumbled vacuum lines, but i will check again for sure).
got around to the fuel system yesterday and was pleasantly surprised ... the previous owner must have cleaned the carb at some point because the insides were clean and dry. fuel tank had less than half a litre of gas in it and when removed it and drained it the gas looked clear and smelled ok. inside of gas tank looks like new.
cleaned the gauge lenses using the toothpaste method. not a huge improvement but they are somewhat better.

disregard my comment re : the PAIR system. after watching yet another of 90gtverts EXCELLENT videos i now see what the system consists of and what needs to be done. dont know where i would be without youtube and people like him.
