I sold the vision and the same day bought this thing for 50 euros. It's a Honda MT5 with a 5 speed MT8 motor. It's nothing fancy just a 125cc Eurocilindro (later became Athena), 24mm Mikuni VM and a proma chamber. It has the shorter MB5 front fork with disk brake (MT5 = drum). I came across this thing through some whatsapp group im in. One of my friends knew some dude from the coffee shop he regularly visits who needed to get rid of his moped because it was in the way. He had this thing in the corner of his garage collecting dust for about 10 years or so and it needed to go. He said yeah come pick it up for 50 bucks otherwise it's going for scrap metal, i was like....that thing is mine!!! Ofcourse it didn't run. The gas tank was a bit rusty in the inside, leaky petcock, dirty carb, cracked intake boot, no oil in the gearbox, weak front brake, front fork totally jammed. So cleaned the tank by putting gas and gravel inside and shook it around for a while and repeated that a few times. Put some fresh new oil in the box but the seal started to leak, still have one lying around from a previous honda build i think. Theres no brake fluid in the brake reservoir, it does brake but needs a fill. I dunno if im gonna do the fork, maybe leave it as is. Cleaned out the carb. Anyway it needs some work done to it.

I agree! So much potential there...and very rare double spoke Comstar wheels!

I agree! So much potential there...and very rare double spoke Comstar wheels! Not rare at all here. Very common actually. In the 90's and 00's one of the most common mods for mt5's. For some reason a lot of mbx's got scrapped and the wheels put on mt5's. I even once gave away a set to a friend because those wheel were worth sh*t at that time. I didn't want the hassle of selling them to some stranger.

Nice find. One of my mates had an MT5 when it was new. My DT50 was way faster. Till he bolted on an MT80 cylinder. Very rare here now. Those wheels are worth quite a bit over here, if in good condition. The fact that they can't be rebuilt makes good ones rare.

I agree! When Honda came out with them, many hated the concept. I was not a fan of the look, but since have grown to appreciate the design. I have a few US friends who collect them for resale and adaptation to retro bikes or customs.

Lucass, Being us dumb americans will never get to put our greasy mits on one of those rides, can you tell us a bit about them?I'm guessing they had the 56X50 bore/stroke that Japan HAD to have at that time, looks like piston port, rod length? What is the piston pin diameter?6 speed?

190mech You can find a similar US friendly version occasionally Honda MB5 or MB50. They were here for 2 years 82 and 83 I believe. 5 speed manual, and there are a few sources say you can mount up a CR80 cylinder of the same era and I can’t remember but I think some Honda dirt bike 6 speed gear set will swap in.

Over here we had the Honda MTX 125/200. Kawasaki KMX/kDX125/200. Yamaha DT125, and Suzuki's TSX125. Apart from the Honda, they were all easy to get more power from too. 😀

Sure John In the late 70's, early 80's Honda introduced a bunch of 50cc geared mopeds. Honda MT5, MB5, NSR50 and a bunch of others. They were Honda's first 2T mopeds. Lots of engine and chassis parts were interchangable so lots of kids build their 4 speed mt5's and mb5's with a 6 speed NSR gearbox or swapped on a watercooled nsr or mtx-r cylinder. Tons and tons of possibilities. Most of the 50cc bikes had a 80cc counterpart. They were technically and estetically quite similar, again with lots of interchangable parts. For those 80cc bikes some aftermarket parts like bbk's and chambers were available. The MB8 motor had a 50.8mm stroke and unknow stock bore. For this motor some manufacturers made bbk's like the alu/nic 110cc malossi (55mm bore), 125cc Eurocilindro (57mm) and it's 57mm Athena twin. The vintage Eurocilindro has a chrome bore, the newer Athena a nicasyl bore. Parmakit also carries a 57mm alu bore. The mb8 motor came in a 5 speed stock, but there where also 6 speed ones around...dunno where that gearbox was taken from. Maybe a mtx80?? Dunno about rod lenght, probably around 100mm. Wristpin is as i recall 16mm. In the past i built a 6-speed mb8 motor with 57mm athena, 32mm mikuni TM, v-force reeds from a suzuki RM85, upgraded clutch with 1 extra plate. The clutch basket was milled out at the base to support one extra plate. I was planning on later putting on a Cagiva Mito 125cc cylinder. They have a similar stroke to the mb8 motor. I was to go into a Puch Maxi frame, but never fininshed that project. I have some pics floating around i think...shall i post em here? ryan_ott I think the clutch and jug from a 82' 80cc elsinore can be swapped plug and play on a mb8 motor.
