2 years ago I bought a Tao Tao New Speed 50, worked great most of that summer but I found as many have already said that the carbs in these things leave a lot to be desired. I replaced it (perhaps stupidly) with identical replacement part, ran okay and then carb went bad again. This season I replaced it with one of these: www.ebay.com/itm/60cc-Carb-Gy6-Carburetor-Moped-Scooter-fit-49cc-50cc-Scooter-19mm-PD19J-Taotao/332032188546?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649Now if this replacement is junk, can you recommend a good 3rd party replacement? The trouble I am having with this is when I got it installed the first trip of the season it ran good and I went about 20 miles and I parked it for 2 weeks. Now when I start it will sputter for a few seconds and stop. I drained it and filled the tank with 93 octane ethanol free gas. What can I try next? Thanks, D

Thanks, D First try to let it run it could still be air in the system. so keep starting it for short periods. other issue could be air in the fuel filter togheter with the fuel line not running correctly. (had it once.) And a good carb would be a basic. Keihin PD18J Ah and opening the carb also wouldn't hurt remove the jets and blow through them just to make sure they are open. And for the rest well. its hard sometimes to see where the problem is in the carb. hope you can find it ;D

There's a filter in the tank. Could be clogged. Easy Test....pull the fuel line coming from the tank off and see if fuel pours out in a steady stream. You'll need to bypass any vacuum operated cut off. Got good fuel flow? Bad vacuum cutoff, vacuum leak or carburetor issues (but also check your valve settings) Get in the habit off adding a small amount of fuel stabilizer in your tank ESPECIALLY if you won't ride it for a week or more. Make sure you run it so it gets all the way through the jets in the carb. I use SeaFoam but others wil do fine. My mowers stored outside will crap out completely within 2 - 3 weeks without fuel stabilizer. but can go months WITH it....and start first or second pull. Before I started doing this I was ALWAYS having to pull the carbs and clean them (PITA). I recommend you add a fuel stabilizer to ANY vehicle that runs on gasoline that won't be started for more than two weeks. Another trick is to fill your tank to the top. Any air space allows condensation as the fuel cools overnight. That gets water in the gas. Carbs (new ones) are hit & miss. I've received brand news ones that were garbage (internal defects).
PS...I used to make a good bit of money on service calls because of water in the gas. People would even swear they put "fresh" gas in it......"fresh" out of a gas can stored in the shed (with about an inch of condensate water in the bottom)

This is what I was able to do so far; 1. Since there is no pet cock on this thing, I pulled the hose from the vacuum operated fuel pump to the gas tank and it came out in steady stream; no dripping or dribbling. 2. I disconnected the carb and cleaned it out, gave it some good shots with carb cleaner, reconnected and put fuel back in the tank. Result: Same thing; sputter, sputter. Plan of action so far is to get some clear tubing (after next paycheck), a pet cock, some fuel stabilizer, and some fresh gas. I did notice something and I don't remember this from before but there is a connector that is just lying there, the wire of which seems to go to a ground or stand off and I can't figure out where it connects to, because it doesn't go to the ignition box or something of that nature.
