I work for a downtown L.A. restaurant that somehow was able to get commercial insurance to allow paid, hourly employees to ride the restaurant's scooters--yes, the restaurant's scooters; they pay for gas, too! The pay is $10.50/hr + tips. I started out navigating the mean streets on a Metro 50cc, but now I ride the Smax 155cc. I work Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 am to 6:00 pm. They have asked me to work on Wednesday nights, too. I am trying to find someone to replace me completely since I work as a teacher and can no longer work 7 days a week, and I prefer not to work nights since it would involve me commuting fairly far. As it is, I ride the subway from the San Fernando Valley to downtown, but the school I work for at my 'day job' is in Palmdale. It works for the weekends, as far as sacrificing any free time, but I do not want to continue.
The pros--hourly pay (currently 10.50/hr to start) and full 8 hour shift. Use someone else's scooter(s). I am fairly certain there are more hours in there if you need them, as I was asked about nights when I just started and was coming up on the end of the school year. I turned them down then, as well. They just hired a day shift person Mon-Fri (I am the Sat./Sun. day shift guy), so there are most likely steady shifts like that (i.e. Mon-Fri nights--there is a guy who takes over the Smax on Sat and Sun nights). Free meal during your shift, and it is most of the menu (you won't be eating their steak dinner or anything with shrimp, but they have good food that retails for $9 to $14 which they let you eat during your mandatory 1/2 hour break).
The cons (some are not cons, but rather might be cons for some people)--you need a M1 motorcycle license (yes, according to California law, even the 49cc Metro requires a full license). I might be wrong, but even if I am, riding the Metro is slow compared to the Smax, and you will be relegated to the Honda 49cc. Also, it is a job with a W2 (some people are used to working for the delivery apps like Uber Eats, Postmates, Doordash, etc. which makes them independent contractors). It does get busy (numerous deliveries AND the streets full of cars at least on Sat and Sun daytime--that is the only shift I have worked) at times.
I have not told the management my intentions, because I feel they have treated me well, so I thought I would ask here as there are several L.A. members. Some of you might want a steady weekend day gig, so it is yours for the taking, but I am quite certain there are other shifts during the week needing to be filled, and they have asked me in the past, which I have chosen not to. If this sounds like something you would be interested in, PM me, and I can fill you in with more details and answer any questions you might have.
