Is it ok to ride the R4 with the clutch/variator cover off? Not worried about dirt getting in or getting caught so much - it is out of the way and I have ridden Harleys that the belt is much more of a threat.
I am more concerned with the clutch shaft having enough support. On the R4 the rear clutch shaft left of the clutch bell seems to go into a pressed bearing on the clutch cover when installed. I don't feel it will hurt anything to test clutch engagement and go around the block a few time to run some clutch engagement tests but wouldn't go full bore for long periods.
Any comments?

You've got the right idea. Riding with the cover off you are likely to feel the vibration from the unsupported primary drive shaft and clutch. I tend to just slap the CVT cover back on with the center bolt for quick tests.

gotcha - look at this one though. Not a triton but I wonder if it hurt anything - have you ever tried it on a Triton? Did it vibrate?

That's my GY6 4T. Different setup, they don't have any support in the CVT cover so it doesn't hurt anything. After testing with the cover off in the past, the vibration tells me all I need to know. You'd probably be fine to make a trip around the block, but then how long does it take to slap the cover back on with a bolt so there's at least some support?

Yeah . . . I think that bearing is frozen on my cover - got it soaking in penetrating oil hoping to free it. I saw your thread on removal - looks like a pain in the ass and I have to find the bearing AND buy the tool. ((((SIGH)))) haha

yah but the stock zuma engine doesn't have a bearing in the case over? so could you just change shafts? cuz i don't think it is really necessarily.

and the zuma has the same engine. I wonder what the difference is. The shaft just rotates....and the engine IS the swing arm. Makes me ponder....

You can feel play in the primary drive shaft of all the Chinese minarellis I've worked on. I've even replaced the shaft and bearing in one just to be sure it's normal. lol There's a reason that bearing is there. Not even sure that a swap is gonna be possible. You'd need the right amount of teeth on the gear to mesh up with the other gears in the final drive and it may be different in other repsects?
