Fiddled with the carb for a while today. Trying to learn a whole new carb setup takes some time. Against my better judgment, I took it on the longer test loop, still without the CVT cover in place. I made it to 56 MPH and was surprised to see 11K on the tach for the first time. The CVT is still a mixture of non standard parts, using the minarelli OR torque driver, and a long Polini belt. I think this particular combo is not going to work well for top speed. I think its time to switch back to the stock style aftermarket TD which is smaller in diameter than the mina OR, but it has a smaller center diameter so it can likely get into a taller gear. I will also have to move back to the stock Kymco belt which is simply too short to utilize all of the rear pulley. There has to be a belt out there somewhere, that is just right.

If you have a stock minarelli TD, maybe swap out the over range TD for a stock minarelli TD and see how that performs.
Or maybe run the "zx trans" setup like most of the Hawaii guys. It's the ZX torque drive pulley and belt. But then again, your Kymco may have came with the ZX sized TD. I'm unfamiliar with the Kymco bikes.

What is the length on the stock Kymco belt?
*edit* i just went back a few pages and seen the specs for the Polini belt.
Would a Cinarelli belt work? 788-18-30.

The Kymco pulley is definitely bigger than the stock Elite pulley. Unless they are talking about the DIO "ZX" pulley, which I know nothing about.

Kymcos are very rare here. Never seen a modified/ fast one on Oahu.

I got derailed a bit yesterday. I don't really know for sure what the issue was, but I soft seized the motor about 5 times. The day before, I had the carb apart to make some measurements, I put it all back together and left Scootopia to take a real ride since it HAD been running so good. I noticed signs of leanness almost immediately, I got it back to the shop and tried to figure it out for a while, but ended up giving up and going home, disgusted. Came in today and completely went through the carb, but found nothing out of place. I put it all back together and got it running, took it for a test run and it is back to normal. It may have been the air filter leaking at the carb connection. The filter inlet is just a tad bigger than the carb, and the spacer I had in there may have been out of place. Thats all I can think of. It gets better though! My buddy was here just as I got it running normal again, it was running great. I had taken it down and back the test road a few times and told him to take a run on it. He hopped on and took off! He went down the road fine, but on the return trip I was watching him and as he got close to being back I heard the motor scream high revs then tink tink tink tink tink..... It was at that point I noticed the front pulley half rolling down the road followed by the belt, both items passed him! Surprisingly there was no real damage beyond the sliders being hacked up, the ramp plate sliders were gone, along with the variator nut. Somehow there was almost zero damage to the splines on the crank and no damage at all to the splines on the pulley. Even funnier, I had just spoken the words to another buddy standing with me, "if it can be torn up, he will do it" 5 seconds later it happened! Now I know what you are thinking "oldgeek is getting old and forgetful at a frightening pace, he forgot to tighten the variator nut" But I promise I had it tight, thats one thing I am anal about. I think the nut was worn or something. last week I had the same nut come loose while it was idling at the shop, and I heard it. I assumed I MUST have not tightened it that time, but clearly there was something else going on! Thats my story and I am sticking to it!

Do you have a CHT gage?
I read that strokers are prone to heat spikes and snapping belts.

This picture explains a lot for me! No wonder the temps I was seeing were not = to the seizes I was having.

It was just hanging in the shroud, and still measuring the air flowing around the cylinder.

Are you going to take off the head to see what the 5 soft seizes may have done?
Or at least check the compression.

At least look thru the exhaust port to see the rings condition.

You have it all going on! Blame your mate. Variator nuts do stretch over time. It's supposed to be a service item. But nobody really changes them much.
