Bought a Taotao VIP scooter from a fella with no key but had a title. Turns out he hot wired it. Now i ordered new keys i plugged them up and theres a major issue. When i turn the key its like it doesnt exist. Starts whether the ignition part is present or not. Turn the key nothing happens. Whether the key is on or off it will start and all lights will turn on. However when you turn the ignition it does not act as a killswitch either. In addition the electric start does not work either. Is anyone familiar with the level of hotwire this person did to this moped? I cannot figure out how to reverse it.

Well for the electric start brake handle must be held first , your ignition is definitely bypassed somewhere. Time to pull some covers & investigate. There may be some generic wiring schematics in the tech help area.

If recent model Taotao. there is a 'jumper plug' under the fork cover that is used by remote start/alarm hookups. With the jumper removed, the kill function of the ignition switch is defeated. The only other thing the ignition switch does is enable the power from the battery to be directed to the cluster, turning on the fuel gauge, and in some cases, some cluster lights. I think it also enables battery power to the starter relay via the brake switch and the kill switch and the starter button switch, more or less. tom
