So this might be a stupid question but I’m picking up a racer 50 this Friday and it’s automatic/1gear. Was wondering if there was a way to make it a manual. I’ve always liked the manual transmission about normal motorcycles. Thanks for the help.

If you talking about the Tao Tao Racer 50, the short answer is no. But there may be a way if you do an engine swap. There's lots of small bore engines with gears that might fit. Would require a custom engine mount though.

Because I’m only 17 and don’t have my endorsement yet. I like the bike because only being 49cc I can register it as a moped but it does have a 90cc big bore kit. I want to learn to ride on this until I can get money to purchase a bigger bike.

You want gears and want to maintain it as a moped, Aprilia RS50 or a Derbi GPR50 I’m sure there a few others but those are the first that came to mind, 49cc and 6 speed gearbox. Pricy and hard to find but fun to ride. Or just get a 2T scooter and wave bye-bye to everyone else.

Know anywhere that would be a good place to go to see what will fit on the frame? Sorry I don't. But to be honest, with all the custom work and money it would require, you'd be better off with a Grom clone or a Monkey bike. They have gears and the Monkey bike is 50cc.

I was going to pick up a super nice from awhile back but the deal ended up falling through. Would love to have one though. Just don’t have the money

IF you don't have an obligation to that bike yet, consider trying to find more of a moped type that uses a pit bike style engine, ripped off from Honda trail bikes and XR50s and such. You can get those in automatic so they're legal as a moped, and then do an engine swap for semi-auto (shifting without a clutch) or full manual. Tons of engines out there for those that should bolt in from 49cc to over 150cc. A semi-auto could be done with minimal effort. True manual would require some work to add the clutch cable and lever and figure out how you're going to actuate the rear brake. Note that it is often not legal to have over 49cc or manual shifting in a moped/scooter, but laws vary from state to state. Some bikes are sold in larger sizes with manauls, but then you must have a motorcycle license. I just got an SSR Lazer 50 used on craigslist last year and have a 160cc manual engine here for a swap. I know there are other models that use this engine, but this is the only one I can think of ATM. Wildfire at least used to make them. Sachs Madass was the popular and more expensive one, that also came in a 125cc manual model, but I don't think they still make those. www.ssrmotorsports.com/store/moped/lazer5.phpTo your original question; sure it can be done... but it's not worth it. You could cut off the CVT and gearbox section of the engine case. That acts as the swingarm and holds the rear wheel. You'd then have to fabricate a swingarm, which will be difficult to do right. May have to move the engine forward. Then you'll have to find a way to fit a drive sprocket on the crankshaft where the variator normally fit. The rear wheel would likely be replaced with one already incorporating a sprocket. Obviously you'll need a chain, and adjusters on your swingarm. Then you'll have to figure out what you're doing for a rear brake, like swapping to disc and adding a master cylinder and maybe right foot operated lever. Again, long story short is that it won't at all be worth the trouble unless you are an experienced fabricator that loves projects. Other thought is, before you buy this one try to test ride or go rent a scoot. Maybe you'll like the convenience of an auto trans more than you think.

Or buy a Derbi GP1 and swap in a minarelli am6, derbi ebe, or a china pitbike motor.

There used to be a variator that changed the bike so it "shifted" but it was gimmicky and other than allowing you to shift the variator it was useless
I can't remember the name and google is letting me down, but there is a youtube video out there someplace of this thing.

The monkey is a 125cc. Basically a grom.

atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/mcy/d/alpharetta-1978-garelli-ss-top-tank/6781281828.htmlPosting my custom 1978 Garelli SS Top Tank moped. Everything works. Has custom ported head 77cc, motorcycle chain, new motorcycle tires. Tuned exhaust, bigger carb thats been tuned (jet adjustments), new brake cables, new clutch cable. As you can tell this is highly custom one off build you wont see another one like it. Custom leather seat with Garelli engraving. Would be great as a show piece in any store or add to your collection. [it does say that there's a clutch cable - I bolded it from the ad, but the ad also says it's an automatic, so I'm not sure what's going on there]
