Got a thunder earlier this week. Performed the recommendation that I found on their pre inspection page. Drained stock oil, filled with cheap 10w-40, changed tran oil to valvoline 80w-90, replaced plug to NGK 7544 iridium, filled with 93octane. Would not start. Sprayed starter fluid in carb, started right up but would not accelerate. After some tinkering I finally got it going but is very jumpy at higher speeds. It idles great. Assuming it was the main jet I took the carb out. There is no way to take the carb apart. The screws are machined with no head. I ordered a new carb off of amazon.
Today I took everything apart to get it ready to just pop the new one in and noticed debris in my fuel filter. Removed it and found metal shavings in the filter. It doesn’t look like much of a filter.
I’m fairly new to this so looking for advice. I’m guessing the shavings were in the tank and something made it past the filter and petcock to the carb. Should I be worried about my petcock now? Will a new fuel filter be sufficient enough now that I drained the tank or should I clean the tank?
The new carb comes with a air filter that attaches to the carb. Should I use this or the old one? If I use the new one where does the ?blow back hose? Attach to that was on the side of the airbox hose.

Use the stock airbox. It will be simpler to tune for now.

There is no way to take the carb apart. The screws are machined with no head. Speculating you will be researching how to make the 139QMB engine go faster. Save yourself the grief of degraded reliability and bearing failure issues . . replace with at least a 125cc scooter.

Thanks. I looks like I’ll have a spare carb. Not too sure about the speed thing. Be nice but the cost outweighs the benefits IMO

I got it going with the new carb no problem. Doing a little tuning but don’t know about 50. GPS average top is around 36. Do you know what weight rollers are typically in it stock?

Love mine. Upgrades: Painted matte black 44mm bbk NCY variator and faceplate Dr. Pulley 5.5g sliders Kevlar belt Keihin pd19j carb Deristricted airbox EGR/Pair delete Tachometer Fuel shut off valve instead of petcock Tygon fuel lines and aluminum filter Upgraded mirrors Just added dual USB port wired to the front LED running lights. Not shown in pics. Runs great. Learned how important torque specs are while working on this baby. Was a great learning experience. I do anywhere from 10 to 30 mile rides regularly. I don’t worry a bit.
