Was driving my scooter and went to squeeze the left brake handle and there was no brake. The handle is just completely loose. No tension whatsoever. Any idea what happened?

Could be a broken cable if it was a sudden loss of tension.
Otherwise you may just need to spin the adjustment nut on the brake end until its tight again.

Is it common for a brake cable to break just all of a sudden?

Likely the cable was starting to fray some time ago, or was rusting inside the sheath. Finally got down to the last several strands, and you pulled hard enough to split them. When you get it off and inspect, you'll likely find long term damage that occurred over time. Alternative is the cable broke loose from the lead 'slug' at the end, and just slipped free. tom
