EGR tube. Exhaust Gas Recirculation (emissions control device) It takes a portion of the exhaust gasses and recycles them through the air box to be re-burned again inside the engine to reduce emissions. You can remove the entire system and plug off the openings.

You can cut the black tube about 2 1/2 inches from the valve cover and then shove a short fat bolt in the end to plug it off OR, you can remove the silver tube and make a metal plug to go over the port on the cylinder head something like this: All you need is some flat steel, a hack saw a grinder and a drill. Trace the outline of the end of the EGR tube onto the metal and mark the holes blah blah blah... If the old gasket is unusable then you can make one with gasket material or use RTV silicone. The fat black tube should run to a canister that has a vacuum line to it and another tube that runs to the air box. If you are going to keep the air box then plug off the nipple where the tube attached using the bolt in a tube method and plug off the vacuum line/port the same way. A short piece of vacuum tube with a screw in one end makes a nice cap.

I was able to find a metal bracket to fit that at the hardware store. Didn't need to make one myself. The bolt in the tube blew out when I put in the A9 cam I recommend the bracket + gasket over the hole.
