Scooter Rescue 101
It was a stormy night, wind, rain and small amount of ice on the side of the road, As I was rolling my
50 passengers motorcoach up the long Baker Grade. Returning empty, almost ghostly empty after delievering my small group
of passengers to L. A.
But what do I see, as I was aproaching the top of the old Baker Grade, not sure but looking harder. A lone scooter
on what looked like a 150cc or smaller.
in the slow truck lane doing about 40 mph up this tough hill, with semi truck on his tail. First thought, get your
butt over on the shoulder before for you are part of the pavement.
Feeling a kindrid spirit for this lone scooterer. Remenbering I have spent many of hours on the highway with semi's
blowing by me. Knowing the many years of traveling this part of I-15 Las Vegas to/from Southern California, having
never seen a small scooter traveling this stretch of road that has done in so many of cars, trucks and buses
of all kinds.
I need too meet this brave ( or fool hearted ) adventurer. But how?
Pulling into the highway rest stop just a few miles down from the top. Knowing from experiance, how can this person
pass up a rest area. Parking my old bus with the semi's step outside, looking for this person pulling in for a stop.
Leaving the rain on the other side of the mountain. Seems like a nice fall night, almost forgetting what I have just
drivin through.
Expectations, experience rider, well care for scoot and supplies for such a trip. It seemed just moments when the lone
highlight of a scooter was pulling into this stop. Pulling out my Nevada Scooter Brigade business card ready to meet this
hardy road wariour. What do I find? Willie, a young man in his early twenty, soaking wet, shevering cold. On a machine
that once was a scooter. Who just bought first scoot ( still had the For Sale sign tape to the front ) the day before and
decided to take a trip from Fresno, California to family in Las Vegas, Nevada a 390 mile trip. Olde to be young again.
So we loaded his scooter in the luggage bay. Took Willie and his scoot the last 90 miles to Vegas. Wish him luck and sent
him on his way. Scooter life is good.
