I met up with ryan_ott and MKDeuce on Friday afternoon in Ocean City, MD for the Endless Summer Cruisin' classic car show. They came from different parts of PA and we all still managed to be there within about a 30 minute span. Not bad.
The weather was overcast with strong winds and coastal flooding. The flooding didn't affect us too much, but the south side of town had water in the streets and the very end of the strip was shut down with police blocking it off for the majority of the time that we were there. It was mostly just enough to annoy us. Getting water sprayed on the GoPros and splashing us and getting saltwater on everything. Ryan particularly enjoyed that. He even oiled his exhaust partway through and will likely spend a long time getting the Zuma back to show condition. It's probably on a rotisserie right now being detailed from every angle. The pic below should give you an idea.
Unfortunately, that weather deterred most of the car show cruisers and crowds from coming out. Normally, the scoot is a huge advantage there. Traffic is so heavy that the bus lane is about the only thing moving. There were times when we could move better than traffic, but it definitely wasn't busy. Large crowds came out in a few spots after dark, but I went through town just after midnight on my way home (normally I'd take the back way in the truck because of traffic) and even the large crowds were gone.
That said, I had a lot of fun riding with Ryan and Brandon. We tried to entertain the people in lawn chairs with a symphony of two-strokes at least. They turned heads and got some cheers. I'm not used to riding with other 2Ts or anything other than passing rentals really, so it amused me how much it sounded like an angry lawncare crew when we all got on the gas together. These things sound kinda throaty from the air inlet noise when you're on them, and then you hear them from third person and we really are just buzzing around. Better still, we all ran similar RPM (10,000-11,000) WOT so we matched frequencies pretty well.
We tried to get cars to race us, but the cars really weren't doing much around us. Every time we'd stop to change batteries or something, we'd hear a burnout somewhere in the distance. Guess we were in the wrong place at the wrong time. I think we amused some of the people in cars at least. Hard to blame them for not doing much I guess. There were more cops than they really needed, prob because of the lower turnout. Leaving town I saw 5 cops within 2 blocks just waiting on roadsides with their lights off watching traffic.
Speaking of racing... it was surprisingly even across the board. We must have raced away from lights 100 times it seemed like and every time was pretty even. Sometimes there'd be a better start or one would pull a little, but for the most part they ran very close to each other. Ryan and I were side by side at the end of the night and I mean we didn't change position from 0-50MPH. I really thought that Ryan would smoke me and Ryan and I would prob both leave Brandon when I saw what his setup was. I had even asked Ryan before the show if we could trade scoots for a race just to see how it averaged out since I'm over 100lb heavier than Ryan. Didn't need to though.
I'll post what I recall from the 3 setups below. I'm certain I'll get at least some of Ryan's info wrong because Ryan changes so much stuff around that I'm always lost. Chime in and let me know what's wrong about your setups if you guys read this. Brandon's was really surprising to me. I did not think he'd hang with us. BTW, for anyone that doesn't know, my scoot is the naked one (T2) with the bright wheels, Ryan's is the super clean black Zuma, and Brandon's is the Zuma with the color-change kinda copper color.
T2 | Black Zuma | ~Copper Zuma | |
Cylinder | TPR 86cc | Athena Evo 70cc | Stage6 Sport Pro MKII |
Cooling | Liquid, Dual Radiator | Liquid, Single Radiator | Air, Stock |
Carburetor | 25mm DellOrto | 21mm DellOrto | 17.5mm DellOrto |
Exhaust | Peace Pipe | Yasuni Carrera 16 | Yasuni City 16 |
CVT | Malossi OR | Polini Vari, TPR Rear Pulley | Malossi MultiVar (non OR), Stock Rear Pulley w/Elongated TD Grooves |
Clutch | Modified Stock | Dr Pulley HiT | Stage6 Torque Control |
If you check out that list, Brandon's Zuma was clearly the underdog. That thing is a great sleeper setup, because even after telling what it was I didn't think he was gonna keep up like he did. Better still, he's still using the stock oil injection, says he gets somewhere around 60MPG, and even still uses the electric start. Plus, the City 16 pipe lets him keep the center stand unlike the Carrera 16. Seems like a setup that's tough to beat dollar for dollar.
I was the only one doing power wheelies though. Barely got to do any of them because traffic was moving well and it just ain't happening above ~10MPH. Occasionally it would barely lift the wheel when I went to show off and then once it came way up when I snapped the throttle and I let out quickly before it could toss me off.
I was also the only one to get the rear wheel off of the ground. I didn't even know T2 could do that. I don't even know what happened. We took off and then they braked behind a car and I had to let off and brake hard. Felt like skidding and gripping, but it gripped enough that I'm pretty sure my back tire was in the air at least a little and I really thought I was gonna eat it. Luckily, it was a non-incident other than an elevated heart rate.
Big show or not, I think all 3 of us had a great time. At least I know I did. My trip odometer says we rode 95.0 miles. Well, Ryan and I. Brandon left 1 lap earlier than us to make the longest trip home.
Thanks to them for making the trip down. Ryan was also kind enough to provide me with video from his helmet cam and a side/rear cam, so I've got 4 views of most of it. Not sure how great some are because of water splashing on everything. I will get a video together, but it's prob gonna take a bit. I normally have to try to sync 2 cams on one scoot basically. 4 cams on 2 different scoots will be a new challenge for me, especially since I never thought to do anything like clap by both scoots to make that simple.
Also, maybe Ryan will post more pics. I'd imagine his phone did better than my old cam.
