I am in the process or reviving my 2005 Metro. I bought it new and proceeded to beat the ever-living urine out of it over the course of 14 years (I blew out 4 rear shocks in 10 years, rode it hard and put it away wet). I currently have 12,xxx miles on the clock and need to replace my head gasket for sure, and maybe piston + rings as my compression is barely at 50psi. I can hear some chuffing so I'm fairly certain that my compression issue lies with my gasket and/or piston. I checked my valve shims and had to adjust the intake shim, but that didn't help my compression.
To add a little background and context, I will be tandem rebuilding my Metro with my buddy who bought it at the same time as I did. His Met has 16,xxx miles on it and NEEDS its crank bearing/assembly replaced. We would like to wring as much speed out of the little guys as possible while we tear the engine down to the crankshaft (I say we because I plan on replacing my crank bearings as well because at 12k miles I feel as if I am riding a ticking time-bomb). *Note starting at 6k-ish miles we both started religiously changing our oil at 500mi or every season, whichever came first.
So, this brings me to my main question - is there any 58cc BBK piston/piston kits ANYWHERE anymore? Did we miss the boat by 10 years?
Our goal is to get to the mid 40s to 50 if possible.
I plan on installing/performing:
- Air box delete (including jet work to my OEM carb)
- New variator + 5g sliders + drive face + belt (interesting point - my Met is on its original belt, iirc)
- CDI + Ford Panther COP ignition coil
- Maybe Dr. D exhaust - is this worth the ~$250? My main motivation here is that I have beat this thing so bad that my exhaust header has flattened and I believe that is restricting the exhaust a bit...
Am I missing anything? Am I wasting my time?
Some misc stats -
I''m about 180 lbs. My current top speed is approximately 33mph, with my historical maximum speed being 38ish mph.
My buddy is about 140 lbs. His Met doesn't chuff (I didn't check his compression as his crank bearing sounded like a bag of marbles let loose in his crankcase). His historical pre-crank bearing grenade speed was 41 or so.
