Hi all, I'm a new scooter owner and I ride my scooter daily to work (1985 Honda SH50 City express / scoopy) and notices a rattling or almost grinding noise. Any idea?
I stopped riding it for a week and was able to take the cover off last night and look. I found a lot of shavings from the belt, so I am going to replace it. There was also a very loud high pitched whining noise from the CVT when the bike was revved up. Any ideas what this could be? What should I look for in the CVT? Engine starts about 30 seconds into the video.
Thanks! Honda SH50 city express / Scoopy 2 stroke 50CC

Hi it,s difficult to tell what's from the sound alone, time for that new belt and a good look a your variator,a good clean always helps,3 common faults, stripping the thread, pinching the belt and wrong assy, check out the tech section good info there, invest in a variator locking tool and torque wrench.do not use poet tool in there.please ask if you struggle.

IMO when it's time to change the belt; it's time to clean/check the whole CVT. Having a noise like that, definitely check it all over.
It seems much worse when the cover is on, so that makes me think something is hitting the cover. Could even be the belt hitting it. Look for signs of contact.

Thank you both for the advice, I'll be checking it out in more detail this week. Thanks!

I think 90GTVert gave you a good start...he knows! The sounds I heard...tough to make sense of...but maybe you have a clutch spring that is not right? Clanging metal in a variator and clutch just seems funky. Your vibration could be an un-balance?

Me and 90gtvert where typing at the same time follow his lead (but not the power tools only my opinion) if your happy with the speed of your scoot get a new belt from Honda while your new to this sort of thing.take pictures as you disassemble ,the picture attached is of my Yamaha CVT and the slow method I use to compensate for short term memory loss. Hey all! Just saw and witnessed a similar issue...maybe. 90GTVert gave good advise above, regarding case wear/contact. My local CVT guru, speaks little English, but knows his shite.
He showed me that a local "trick" is to use a slightly wider (OD) belt, but proper length. Pulls up higher on both variator and clutch. If the angle is a bit off...they put it on a machine and sand/buff it smooth. Creative! Higher speeds, lasts as long as a good set of...nothing. He implied that they shred from too much heat.
The racing guys use rubber treatments like Karting guys do on tires.
I do not think this is a good mod for street scoots, but shows that the measurements need a good looking into. Mark your pullies and adjust. Maybe no two belts are the same...

Well I popped off the cover again today and had a closer look. Everything in there is covered in a black rubbery dust that must have come from the belt! I will definitely be doing a good clean in there, any things to keep in mind?
Also, I don’t have a impact wrench or variator lock, and the stores are closed here because of the lockdown. I did happen to find a torque wrench though. Thoughts on how to tackle this problem?
Thanks... and stay healthy out there!

blast it with a air compressor and blow all that out. Do it outside your garage cause it'll go everywhere. You do need a holder or a impact gun to get it off. A gun is a good investment. Never use it for any other work on your engine except take the clutch and cvt off. You really want a gun cause if you get all fancy with an open cvt your variator won't have anything to hold on to. HF has one for $50

You can use a large wrench, through the wheel, and spin the wheel til the wrench is pinched between the shock, exhaust, and wheel. I use this trick on roadside emergencies with my Helix. Works fine, small, or not small, chance of messing something up... Or, a ratchet strap, and a post or tree. Strap the tire to the tree, and use a breaker bar....
