If things change for the better regarding this Covid-19 virus thing, I have
plans to participate in a thing called the "Scooter Cannonball Run" it is an
event held every 2 years. Much more sedate than the idea of more conventional
cannonball runs. This one is a timed endurance challenge. This year, the course
runs from Bar Harbor Maine to Eureka California over the course of 10 days with
overnight stays at motels. (mostly; some opt for campgrounds from time to time)
One needs to get from one checkpoint to another for each day with a handicap
based on a vintage PS200 Vespa. Go too slow and you loose points... ditto if
your ride for that day is too fast (based on handicap) Smaller and/or older
scoots gain an advantage over newer bigger scoots IMO. (279cc max I believe)
Many do the ride mostly for the fun and camaraderie of it while some others are
more competitive. I look to have fun with it... but hope to do well points wise.
But again, it depends on how freed up the country is... if not enough then the
rumors are that it will be postponed until 2021. As much as I want to do the
ride anyway, (since I have non-refundable type paid reservations at hotels) I
may not actually or realistically be able to if there are interstate travel
restrictions, shut down hotels or who knows what other impediments that may be
arrayed against me and several other riders that want to go ahead with the ride;
even without the cannonball run aspect of it.
NY to LA that fast is wildly insane... pretty dangerous too I'd think. Certainly
not a thing for the faint of heart or unprepared to even think about attempting.
