I have been a lurker here for quite a while. Life long motorcycle rider and have been riding scooters for the last 13 years. I have owned about a dozen scooters, mostly Japanese and Taiwanese. I did own 2 different China scoots prior to 2010 and they were both pretty crappy. I keep hearing how China scoots have come a long way in terms of reliability? But the internet is a confusing and conflicting place to find out which brands (if any) are decent quality.
I currently live in AZ and am riding a Lance PCH 150 (made by SYM), but plan on moving back to NM in about 2 or 3 years. Land of Enchantment and free moped licensing (yah!!!). I fondly remember living there before and rocking the streets with a SYM DD50 (two stroke) and a Yamaha C3. I've owned a SYM HD200 and Honda Elite 110, but never had has much fun as I did blazing WOT on those nimble little 49cc scooters.
I'm going to get a later model Yamaha Vino Classic or Honda Metropolitan but would like to try a Chinese 49cc (or two) as well. Remember, in NM you can keep a garage full of 49cc scooters at no expense (besides original purchase). I am well versed at wrenching, do all my own repairs, maintenance, and upgrades (except mounting tires on small diameter rims, I just can't master that skill).
So, what brand of Chinese 49cc scooter would be worth trying? Don't expect it to be perfect, but don't want something that you spend more time fixing instead of riding. Or maybe I should just keep rocking those Japanese or Taiwanese scooters and not bother?
Thank you 90GTVert, your how to videos are top notch.

They have improved since over 10 years ago, but they still aren't great. They can be decent scoots, but they're still a collection of cheap parts so they're more likely to have issues than higher tier scoots.

Welcome to the forum. Chinese build quality has improved. Over here in the U.K. There are some quite nice Chinese scooters. But with the improvement in quality, comes the increase in price.I I guess that old adage you get what you pay for applies.

I like my Tao, 8K miles. Have you had any mechanical issues besides normal wear and tear items?

I really think that Chinese stepped up on their scooter game this time. My Tao Tao Thunder just came in today. manufacturing date is 3/2020. I got it 00.3 miles and putted 23.1 miles on it today. (half throttle). Need to break down the engine all the way first. Then I will know how it performance at full throttle. Will make new thread about this later.

Don't say "break down" you don't want to jinx the scooter Looking forward to your observations!

to badmotorscooter, as follows: wheel valves replaced (common PIA!); battery (common); broken spark plug (due to awkward access angle by an obvious incompetent); tire failure (a B....) but it happens; headlight bulbs (replaced with 'blue' 35W halogens); several Mandatory valve adjustments (.5, 2k, 5k, miles).
