So I'm rebuilding a 150c engine for the first time. It's going fairly smoothso far. The only issue I have is the little gear that goes on the crankshaft behind the variator doesn't want to stay on the crank. It has a tapered fit on there and there's no Woodruff key. I hit it with a mallet and a length of pipe that fit over the crank but it doesn't stay put on the crank. The question is: Is the variator the only thing holding it on or do I need to hammer on it some more? The little round gear on the far left in this pic:

the variator will press it on once you tighten the nut.

Thanks! I figured that's how it worked but I wanted to hear it from someone who's been there and done that. In the 7 years I've been fixing these things I have never had to rebuild one til now. It's pretty friggin' simple really. The hardest part was getting that fancy nut off that holds the starter clutch on. It's reverse threaded. I used a pipe wrench with a big fat screwdriver running through the con rod to to immobilize the crank. I used a couple of wood block so I didn't mar up the case where the base gasket seals. They make a special impact socket but they are friggin' expensive for something I might not use again for another 7 years. www.scooterpartsexpress.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=561

I cant figure out how to get the kickstart spring into the right position??? Can anyone help. I dont see how it goes back together as it came apart when I took my cover off. The spring which I thought pushed the kickstarter back, doesn't exactly go anywhere which is obvious. Can anyone help me please ? Is the spring tensioned, or is it loose? There is no hole one the kickstart shaft/gear for the spring to go into and so it isn't very obvious. If i cant work it out soon im just going to take it to the scooter shop to get repaired.
Thanks
