First goal is to get this thing running. The rest of the parts will be here tomorrow. Wheels & body panels and what have you.
Posted a pic of my Vino on instagram and a friend asked if I wanted another scooter. Of course! Went over to her garage yesterday and picked it up. It's been sitting in her garage for 7 yrs. and was last registered in 1992.
Hoping it's at least usable. Slow is fine since it'll be for my kids when they get older.
It'll be a slow project. I don't have much time on my hands. Hoping making a thread keeps me motivated. Fingers crossed I can get it running.

Very nice for free. The plastics that are on it don't look too bad.

Very nice for free. The plastics that are on it don't look too bad. It’s actually mostly metal! The “glovebox” is plastic but the front panel is metal. Floorboard is metal too. Pretty sure the side panels will be plastic but I won’t know till they are brought over tomorrow. Already started breaking it down tonight but since it’s still outside I was getting eaten alive by the mosquitoes so I only had an hour or so in me. Engine is disconnected from the frame and I started to remove the wiring harness when I gave up.

I had no idea! It looks like a regular top mount style too. I wonder if a Zuma engine would bolt in there. It might be easier to hotrod later on down the road.

oddest drivetrain yet. the clutch and variator are welded shut. so there's no swapping rollers or clutch springs. overall though it's in really good shape. no scratches on the cylinder or piston, but the piston is very black. Assuming the oil pump has been leaking into the cylinder causing that. the carb is hilariously small at 13mm. the slide is the size of my pinky. going to clean the piston and reassemble and see what's up. would prefer to swap the carb since there's like 47 hoses on it. I'd like to go premix and get rid of the oil injection to clean up all the hoses too.
only has 2600 miles so it was just getting broken in before it sat for decades.
one major issue is the key that came with it doesn't work for the ignition or seat. I sprayed some white lithium grease in the key holes but nothing changed.

You may be able to order a key from Yamaha?you can normally release the seat lock with a little prodding and poking around, post a picture of the key you have and the ignition switch it may be common to other models I use a Yamaha dealers web site parts diagrams to cross reference, they may just need stripping and cleaning if you can get them off,

The code on the key doesn't match any numbers on the ignition so I may just go to a locksmith and have new ones cut from the ignition. Or just remove the whole electric start system lol. the ignition coil is cracked too so maybe bypassing it and just kicking it over for now will work?

When I get around to fixing it I'll post back in here.
I did clean the piston of all the carbon build up today. When I removed the piston the rings were stuck pretty good. The top one loosened up pretty easily but the bottom one barely at all. There's so much sticky gunk under the rings. I can't seem to get them clean to get the rings back on. Any one have any tips for inside the ring channel or whatever it's called?
Also got the parts box so I have everything needed now. I gotta order a base gasket from ebay it looks like. One other thing I may wanna try with this one is opening up the exhaust port. It's really small/restricted.

Use a broken piece of a ring to clean the landings at least this is what I was taught in small engine repair in high school. but an old toothbrush and gas/seafoam should clean it up nice. Or you can try a DIY ultrasonic cleaner like this www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1DtY2VwSyY

Soaked it in carb cleaner overnight. Didn't really do much. That video is wild, those parts look new! I'm going to try that out. I just finished cleaning the carb, holy cow were those jets CLOGGED. I soaked them in carb cleaner overnight too then tried to poke it out but the clogs wouldn't budge. So they soaked all day today too and finally got the gunk out around 9pm. Had to keep poking and blowing with the air compressor for about 30 mins, but now they're clear. The carb it's self could benefit from that DIY cleaner. I'll try that next time I get a couple of mins to tinker.
Since I don't have a battery for it, I'm thinking now would be a perfect time to convert to 12v
Anyone have any tips on that kinda project? Going to search the boards and youtube but wanted to know if anyone here (who all seem to have good tips) has done it. It's either switching to 12v or going with all LED's.
