So I got this Doppler variator and it doesn't fit anything I have. I want to be able to use it though. Does anybody know how or know someone that can open up the splines to fit a normal sized crankshaft? I think the Doppler is 13mm and I need it to be 16mm. I will also need the shim or whatever it's called turned on a lathe to be opened up also. If anyone can help me with this I'd appreciate it.

If you actually need splines changed and not just a diameter, just buy a new variator. It's not just a different diameter, but also different spline count with the 13vs16. That's not something that many can do. Also 13 and 16mm are the OD. Don't recall the smaller figures at the base of the splines, but they may be off enough that it couldn't be done properly. If they have both a large and small spline version of the variator, maybe you can just buy the ramp plate.

Well I have one thing going for me. I live by the largest industrial complex in the united states. That means plenty of machinery services, just have to find the right one. "Needle in a haystack"

Even if you find a shop that can actually do it right. The machine time, setup, and tooling charges will exceed the cost of replacing the entire engine and variator. Just buy a proper size part rather than chasing pipe dreams.

I live on pipe dreams! Or else I probably wouldn't be here right now! But I just got an aprilia minarelli engine and the Doppler fits the crank? So maybe I was sniffing too many gas fumes when I tried it on my sr50

It's a little late now, and I'm not sure why it didn't come to mind earlier, but I have seen 190mech weld the splined key (star washer that usually locks into the fixed half) to the ramp plate to make it fit a different engine. If such a situation ever arises again, that may be the way out. It will add some depth to the whole vari unit, but may be doable. The ramp plate would be drilled to allow it to fit over and then the key would have to be welded on pretty much perfectly centered. I would imagine the easiest way to do that would be to drill the plate just large enough to slide over the crank and mount it and the key to the crank to set them up to weld. Then you'd just need the drive boss bored or to replace the boss to get the vari/moveable half useable. Still a lot of effort considering the cost of most variators vs time/money to mod.
