As I was watching the race with my brother, seeing the congestion and jostling that was going on still so many laps into the race I made the remark, "There's going to be a really bad wreck in the next 10 laps." The tragedy happened on the next lap. Weldon got involved in a secondary wreck caused by a white car near the middle of the course running over debris making the car immediately turn left causing the deadly carnage. I'm glad they canceled the race. he won the indy 500 this year for the 2nd time so i guess he died happy.

It's weird to me watching NASCAR last night and seeing J Johnson hit the wall at speed and it looked like a pretty rough hit. Knocked the wind out of him, otherwise he was fine. It's impressive how so much has improved with the SAFER barrier and HANS device and all sorts of alterations and innovations to race cars. Then the next day I watch someone die from going airborn and hitting a catch fence on the last race of the year before they are implementing cars with different body panels the next year to try and reduce the risk of cars taking flight.

Perhaps the catch fencing could be improved somehow also?
There is a lot of irony here:
1. Dan was 33 - the number of cars in the starting field at Indy.
2. His car's number was 77 - a double lucky number.
3. He lost his life on lap 13.
