Having trouble with a 2007 E-ton Beamer Matrix 2. Had it running great but now it won't take off hot or cold. Just surges forward every few seconds while holding it wide open. Starts, idles and revs up fine. See video for better explanation.
Any ideas on what might be wrong are greatly appreciated!

Something in the CVT isn't behaving properly.

When on the kick stand, does you're rear tire spin freely?

take off the CVT cover, an impact driver helps a lot / is required if it still has the oem phillips screws. It's the black case that says "SANYCO" on it and has about 8 or 9 screws around it. You'll need to remove the airbox first which might also still be those phillips screws.
post a picture here or make a video. if your electric start works you can start it with the cover off and see what happens.
measure the belt width or just look and see if there's a ton of black dust from belt wear.

Hi all - reviving this one after putting the project on the back burner for 4 years as it's time to get it fixed up and sold. Appreciate all the responses and ideas of what might be causing the problem.
I put fresh gas in and made sure it was flowing through to the carb. The rear tire spins fine when on the center stand. The belt measured to be about 15.5mm wide, and I didn't see much of any black dust from belt wear. I even took the belt off and ran it, but the surging still happened, so I'm not sure if it's CVT related
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Here's a video with the CVT cover off. I messed with the headlight switch towards the end of the video cause I found that it seemed to affect the engine RPM. Not sure if that could be related to my issue though. If anyone can spot an issue or has a suggestion, it would be greatly appreciated!

It looks like the CVT isn't working correctly. At low revs the belt should be riding high on the rear pulley. And low at the variator side. How does it sit when the engine isn't running?

Here's how the belt sits when the engine isn't running. It looks pretty even across, not high on the rear pulley/low on the variator side like you said it should be. What would cause the belt to sit like this?

The contra spring in the rear pulley should force the rear to open. Or you possibly Have a variator roller stuck. You need to take the CVT apart and inspect what's going on. Have you changed anything recently, like the belt?

Bingo, I took the variator off, checked the rollers, put it all back together and it's golden now. Thanks for your help!
