I just got a 1999 Yamaha Jog with 3000 miles. It's in great shape, runs perfectly.
There is a sort of grinding noise when I start the scooter. Happens with and without rollers installed. I'm new to 2 strokes, so I'm not sure if it's normal.

:welcome: to the fourm.
It does sound like metal on metal. If it still does that with the belt installed, I'd suggest inspecting the start clutch and gears (behind the variator). Check it all over and look for signs of abnormal contact.

It sounds loud and high pitched to me, but maybe it's just the video. It's normal for them to make some noise.

I'm with Vert on this. That sound is coming from either the variator or the starter clutch. It can't hurt to check. While you're in there, if you have to remove the starter clutch, be sure to check and clean the three crevaces that the roller bearings sit in as well. My roller bearings kept falling out until I cleaned those crevaces and got the actuators to work. Their function is to hold the roller bearings in place. If you're afraid of things falling all over the place and are not as mechanically inclined to remember what goes where, take pitcures at every stage. Come back here for help if you need it.

I took it apart and carefully put it back together, and the noise is mostly gone. Thanks for your help.
