I read somewhere that elephants were used as Bishops.some countries, locales, and times- would you believe this piece is just one piece - a bishop? and how large is this piece and how large the board ? Getty images wants $450 just for this image . hope I'm not breaking the law showing it here. if you don't hear from me by 2 weeks somebody bail me out?

That's a nice set. Are they carved, or a man made material? They are wooden. One piece as far as I can tell with felt bottoms. No plastics were harmed in the making of this set.

Thinks from my fathers family in Richmond Virginia. He passed away two years ago so the history may be lost. Antiques Roadshow?

My great aunt had an intricately carved ivory chess set she purchased in India. One side was smoked to give it a dark finish. The largest pieces were about 4" tall. The board itself was made of ivory and ebony squares divided by gold strips with red velvet lined drawers underneath to hold the pieces. I do not know what happened to it after she died. It was very beautiful.
