They called this area the great plains. Early explorers called it the great American desert. They should have called it the misery plains. The state nearest to me is even named misery. They gave it a really funny spelling, Missouri, the person naming it must have had a cold.
I grew up here but I still hate it. I could stand heat or cold but not both with humidity added. It is an expensive place to live also.

We have about 5" on the ground and it keeps coming. Reminds of being a kid in central Kansass when it snowed a lot. Nothing like what they get up north though.

We got ice yesterday and last night. I had a grocery pickup scheduled for this morning since the forecast was for rain yesterday afternoon to this morning, with the snow/mix supposed to taper off early yesterday. I cleared 1/4-1/2" of ice off of the car. Had to de-ice the doors so they would open. My father was going with me so he comes out and somehow locks the doors before going back in for a minute. I went to open the door and snapped the door handle right off, so now it can only be opened from inside. Getting ready to look up how many $ and how much fun that is to replace.
EDIT : $23 for a generic part color matched; not bad. Prob just have to remove the interior door panel to replace.

We have had 10"+ rain this month, but I will take rain over snow and ice any day.

EDIT : $23 for a generic part color matched; not bad. Prob just have to remove the interior door panel to replace. Usually, sometimes you have to remove/move the rearward window track. Be careful with the dumb plastic clips for the lock cylinder and exterior door handle rods they love to break if it's too cold. Heat gun will help make them more malleable and less likely to break.

Broken door handles is a common result of people yanking on the handles when doors are frozen, or locked in this instance. Remember, all things in moderation, or THIMK (spelling intentional). Kansass (spelling intentional) used to be in the middle of the historic 'ice belt' that due to climate change is moving all over so we were/are quite used to ice...
Besides an ice covering the ice tends to freeze the door gasket to the frame. An annual application of silicone to the door gasket helps as part of fall maintenance.

I actually didn't yank on it. I pulled it harder than a normal door opening for sure. When I bought the new stuff, I saw that the bean counters had saved some money on plastic with the original design. The replacements now fill more area with plastic in the corner where it broke. That said, they're 16 years old and never broke till now so prob cold and a little extra effort. I'm now listening to trees breaking as I type. It's supposed to get windy in the near future, so fingers crossed that the ice is gone by then.

Bean counters should be shot. I know a half cc of plastic over 10,000 parts adds up but it is still crap. The new minimal material engineering design concepts should be scrapped. Remember when the new plastic wonder material was being used to replace metal parts 1 for 1 back in the 60's and 70's? That didn't work so well. They should have learned...
Ice buildup causes a lot of damage and knocks out power.
