Yesterday my wife surprised me with an actual workbench in the garage. I had been doing all my stuff on the floor or between a board sitting on top of two stools.
Currently it's just (new) unfinished wood as the top so i need to acquire something to put on it.
What do people here recommend?

A few years ago a member here suggested using 12" x 12" peel and stick floor tiles. So I found some on clearance at Lowes and have been very happy with them. They are cheap, durable and replaceable. I saw some the other day that were 24" x 24" for $1 each.

Mine is 3/4" plywood covered in 1/8" steel and then I put rubber runner mat over that. The steel was sourced and cut by a local shop and not cheap, but it makes it very durable. It's also nice when I want to set up dial indicators on something, so the magnetic base sticks to the bench. I can't find the rubber runner with one smooth side anymore. Now everything has some texture, which makes it harder to clean.

I recently used some of cuts of laminate flooring, seems to be fairly robust

I like using tempered "Masonite" hardboard.
