Hi folks, So, after replacing and cleaning up the wiring on my 50cc Zuma, I found that the starter cranks very slowly with the spark plug in. New battery but I'm going to verify voltage and drop tomorrow. My question is this, is there any easy way to take the starter out ? It looks like a nightmare. They didn't really leave enough room to pull it right out. On another note, I confirmed I have spark after replacing my Chinese starter relay,( which, as soon as I hit the start button, went up in a cloud of smoke and melted plastic. I suspect it was mis wired), with an OEM Yamaha relay. And of course I have the kickstarter.
Thanks Mad

Alot of us remove the starter gear from behind the variator and just kickstart. You remove weight from the crank and you spin up faster This is a picture of the starter clutch If you remove it you need to get washers from a hard ware store as a spacer so the variator is still spaced out right

Ugh. I didn't want to get into it that deep yet. I got this thing as basically a basket case. Anyhow, battery reads 12.7 key on 10.4 cranking ( seems like maybe a bad cell?) But when I hooked my jump box to it, (which easily jump starts my totally dead V8 truck), it cranks a little bit faster but still pretty slow with a pause at the compression stroke. Thoughts ?

I can take my Yamaha down to the frame in an hour (ish) on a good day,the starter is just 2 Allen keys I get to them with a long extension on the rachet, just takes practice :)the variator area has a lot of debris to cope with and needs regular cleaning to be at it,s best, the kick start is your best judge I measure it on a scale of footwear required! Barefoot to work boots, I ,m using boots so something is amiss.

Hi geoffh, can you explain a bit more about how you reach the starter motor? I can't figure out a way to reach the bottom screw and am already thinking of buying a flexible drill bit extension...

Just to state the obvious, the starter motor is on the left of the engine but you need to access it from the right hand side of the scoot, you get good at removing panels with practice. Geoff
